Louis Mansfield "Buzzy" Johnson peacefully transitioned into eternal rest surrounded by his loving family on Wednesday, March 2, 2016, at his residence.
Louis was born on May 8, 1958, in Fredericksburg and was the youngest son of Shirley Smith Johnson and the late Charles Thomas Johnson Sr. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Dennis Johnson.
Louis attended Fredericksburg City Public Schools, and was a proud graduate of the James Monroe High School Class of 1977. Buzzy, as he was affectionately called by family and friends, was a stellar athlete who was adored by all. He had a unique personality, keen sense of humor, adamant determination and an infectious and endearing laugh.
Buzzy continued his education at Virginia Union University, and upon his return to Fredericksburg, embarked on a journey of service to others that would span three decades. While he held employment in a variety of human services professions, his true calling transcended the confines of the workplace. He consistently sought opportunities to help youth in Fredericksburg and its surrounding counties reach their fullest potential. Through the years, Buzzy took it upon himself to be the catalyst for numerous youth oriented programs and activities. He was passionate about each of his endeavors; however, his proudest accomplishments included founding and coaching the Fredericksburg Lady Runners basketball squad, serving as an assistant boys' basketball coach at James Monroe High School alongside his "brother" Julian Bumbrey, and spearheading the establishment of the Fredericksburg Area Boys and Girls Club. Through this one vision alone, the lives of more than 3,900 area youth have been positively impacted since 2001.
Buzzy was a devout Christian, and he joined Second New Hope Baptist Church at an early age. He took part in its youth ministry as a child, and ultimately worked with the Youth Council as an adult, initiating the concept of annual youth revivals. Buzzy later became a member of Shiloh Baptist Church, Old Site and immediately became an active youth leader despite his declining health.
Buzzy courageously battled a series of health challenges for many years. He approached each obstacle with a physical resilience and unwavering mindset that cannot be characterized with words. His faith and strength were admired by many, and the work he was inspired to carry out has created a lasting legacy that will be felt for generations.
In addition to his mother, Buzzy leaves his wife of 16 years, Sharon Bailey Johnson; two sons, Ronnie and Malik Johnson; a brother, Charles Johnson Jr.; a nephew, Marques Johnson; a niece, Marquetta Johnson; and a special host of uncles, aunts, great-nephews, a great-niece, cousins and truly dear friends to cherish his memory.
A viewing will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. on Monday, March 7, at A.L. Bennett and Son Funeral Home, followed by a Celebration of Life service at 6:30 p.m. at Shiloh Baptist Church, Old Site. A Homegoing Service will be held at noon on Tuesday, March 8, at Salem Fields Community Church. An additional viewing will be conducted one hour before the service. Interment will be at Second New Hope Baptist Church, with a repast at Shiloh Baptist Church, Old Site.
