Melissa Haase
May 23, 1950 - November 25, 2025
Melissa Sue Haase (née Walling), born in Bath, N.Y., passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family. A 1968 graduate of Savona Central High School, she earned a Bachelor of Liberal Studies from Mary Washington College and a Master of Education from George Mason University in 1997. Before beginning her teaching career, she served as a civilian employee for the U.S. Air Force at the Pentagon.
Melissa taught in the Stafford County school system from 1988 to 2013 as an elementary school teacher, guiding generations of students with her love, energy, and dedication. After more than two decades in the classroom, she retired, leaving a lasting impact on the Stafford community.
In 1971, she met the love of her life, James Haase, in Alexandria, VA, and together they shared 54 years of marriage. She was a devoted mother to Carrie Weston (Christopher) and Jamison Haase (Ola), and a loving grandmother to Connor, Camden, and Christian Weston. She is also survived by her brother, Larry Walling, and her sister, Rebecca Malamphy.
Guided by her Christian faith, Melissa approached life with compassion and determination, offering kindness freely while meeting every challenge with steady resolve. She had a lifelong affection for animals, beginning with her beloved Welsh pony, Penny. She shared her husband's passion for history, celebrated her daughter and grandchildren through countless athletic successes, and had a special musical bond with her son.
Her warmth, kindness, and charitable spirit touched all who knew her, leaving a legacy of devotion and love that will continue to shine in the lives she touched.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Richmond SPCA. A celebration of life will be held with family and friends at a later date.
