Joann Harrell Payne, 82, of Stafford County, passed away Sunday, October 14, 2018 at Mary Washington Hospital. Mrs. Payne was born September 8, 1936 in Fredericksburg to Carl G. Harrell and Florence Randall Harrell. She was baptized at the age of 14 at Fairview Baptist Church. Mrs. Payne graduated from Mary Washington College in 1992. She was a member of Falmouth Baptist Church for 63 years and recently attended Canaan Faith Church of God. Mrs. Payne worked at the Marine Corps Base Quantico for 29 years; she loved each and every one of the Marines she met. After her retirement she enjoyed spending time with family, friends, working on crossword puzzles, and playing cards and games. Mrs. Payne loved her Lord and she taught her children to love others. "We love because he first loved us," (1 John 4:19). Survivors include her son, Vernon L. Payne (Patty); her daughter, Julie Payne Cooper (Gary); grandchildren Wendy C. York (Barney), Jeffrey B. Cooper (Anbinh), Wendy Poindexter, Dean Schenemann (Crystal) and Christy L. Schenemann; 15 great-grandchildren and one on the way; two great-great-granddaughters; and son-in-law Mark D. Schenemann. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Julian "Bobby Dick" Payne; daughter Olivia "Libby" Schenemann; and grandson Justin Crickenberger. A service will be held at noon on Friday, October 19 at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Interment will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Falmouth Cemetery Fund, 2220 Warrenton Road, Fredericksburg, VA 22406.
