Phyllis Lane

Phyllis Lane, 85, of Fredericksburg, Va., passed away on Tuesday, November 25, 2025, after a short illness.

She retired from The Free Lance-Star after a career of over forty years as the newspaper librarian. A lifelong Fredericksburg resident, Phyllis was a James Monroe graduate, Class of 1959.

She was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels and was an avid reader. She was an enthusiastic sports fan, especially of the Washington Nationals, Atlanta Braves, and the Washington Commanders football team. Phyllis loved vacationing at east coast beaches, sunshine, tropical vibes, and Jimmy Buffett. She had a compassionate heart, steadfast spirit, ready smile, and deep hearty laugh.

Survivors include her high school sweetheart husband of 66 years, James Lane; daughter, Ashley Piner and son-in-law, Daryl of Savannah, Ga.; and brother, Wayne Gallahan. She was preceded in death by her parents, Pearl and Herman Gallahan.

A service will be held at 3 p.m. on Monday, December 1, 2025, at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home chapel. Interment will be private.

Pallbearers are Patrick O'Connell, Jim Diehl, Rob Hedelt, Keith Epps, Jim Toler, and Stephen Curtis.
