Raymond Elvey Chidester, 102, died October 19, 2016, in Charlottesville, Va. Born Oct. 5, 1914, in Hallstead, Pa., he was a scientific instrument maker for the National Bureau of Standards and an extraordinary watch and clock maker.
Preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Frances Lucas Chidester, on Nov. 13, 2014; his parents, Sarah and Holdridge Chidester; and brother Merle Chidester; he is survived by four children, Alan, Nina C. Thompson (Joseph), David (Soudabeh) and Phillip (Bunny); four grandchildren, Kyle and Janus Chidester, Robin Petty (Garrett) and Camille Thompson (David Mellor); and 3 great-grandchildren, Lillian Mellor Thompson, Callum and Rowan Petty.
He was a member of Goshen Baptist Church and loved by many. Memorial donations may be sent to Hospice of the Piedmont, Development Office, 675 Peter Jefferson Pkwy., Ste. 300, Charlottesville, VA 22911.
