Marjorie Rees Obituary

Mrs. Forest J. Rees, nee Marjorie Gene "Marj" Johnson, of Fredericksburg, passed away on Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2024, at the age of 97 years.

Marjorie Gene Johnson was born on Dec. 23, 1926 in Houston, Texas to Albert Sidney Johnson and Willomae McCrory Johnson.

She graduated in 1943 from Stephen F. Austin High School, Houston, Texas, where she was an officer in the Scottish Brigade. Shortly thereafter, Marjorie and her mother moved to San Antonio, Texas.

As World War II neared its end, a handsome sailor from San Antonio, home on leave, spotted Marjorie at a party. Forest Rees married Marjorie Johnson on Oct. 6, 1945 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Helotes, Texas. Their marriage lasted 73 years until Forest's death in 2018 and produced eight children:

Forest J., Jr. "Frosty" and spouse Susan

Warren L. "Buddy" (Deceased) and spouse Barbara

Elsa Gene (deceased)

Mary Rees Iacoboni and spouse Stephen

Frances Ann "Sassy" Rees Puckett and spouse Dave

John Gerard and spouse Chris

Christopher Wayne and spouse Donna

Edward N. and spouse Sharon

Besides six of her children, she is survived by 12 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Marjorie, fondly known as Marj by friends and Mimi by family, spent the first 40 years of marriage raising her children in often hectic - but always happy - homes in Houston, Austin, Bellaire, and finally, Fredericksburg.

In 1957, the Rees family settled in Fredericksburg. Forest and Marj owned and operated Rees Pharmacy while the children grew up attending local schools.

Marjorie was a founding member of the Hill Country Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. She was president of the organization twice. She also served on the boards of the Fredericksburg Chamber of Commerce and Crimestoppers. Her services and volunteerism to her beloved St. Mary's Catholic Church ended only when she became too frail.

We will miss our "Mimi" but will always remember her with love and happy memories.

The family greeted friends on Wednesday, Aug. 28, from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Fredericksburg, with a Rosary Service at 1:30 p.m., and Mass of Resurrection at 2 p.m.

A private interment followed.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be given in her memory to the St. Mary's School Endowment Fund or to the charity of your choice.
