Donald Smith Obituary

Donald David Smith

Detroit - Donald David Smith was born in Detroit, Michigan on October 1,1930 to Willie Ann Gardener Smith and Eugene Mitchell Smith Sr. Donald was one of nine children. He was an adventurous young man and shared many fond memories of life with his siblings before they lost their mother at an early age.

As a young man, Donald chose the distinct honor of serving his country in the United States Armed Forces. He was fortunate to serve for five years and one day. While stationed in Germany as a driver for the 519th Car Company, Don was able to travel and see the world. He also had the pleasure of transporting many dignitaries including the late Dwight Eisenhower, Vic Damone, Martha Ray, Judge Joe Walker and multiple Generals.

Upon discharge, Donald took a position as a driver for the City of Detroit Transportation System. There he enjoyed 37 years of employment and was recognized as The Highest Ranking Driver. While navigating the streets of Detroit, Donald kicked his smoking habit in exchange for sucking on peppermints and his ever-present wooden toothpick.

On January 9, 1954, Donald was united in marriage to the love of his life, Ms. Clara Bell Cassell in Detroit, MI. This union was blessed with three children, two sons and one daughter, Janice, who preceded him death. The family unfortunately lost Clara Bell in 1992.

Ten years later on October 26, 2002, Donald had another chance at love marrying Ms. Bobbie M. Anderson in Lansing, MI. Bobbie and Donald moved to Atlanta, GA in 2006 where they enjoyed many wonderful years together until his death.

In his leisure time, Donald who lovingly addressed everyone as, "Jack", enjoyed word search puzzles, supporting the activities of his grandchildren, recounting special memories from his life, watching sports and reading the daily newspaper. Donald was a pool shark and an avid car lover. Amongst his prize possessions was his award winning yellow '57 Chevy in which he spent countless weekends at car shows with his son, Dennis. He enjoyed being a mentor to young men and always emphasized the importance of education and self responsibility. His past few years have been spent relaxing in his man cave rooting for the Atlanta Braves and his beloved Michigan State Spartans. Go Green!

Donald peacefully departed this life on January 26, 2019 in the arms of his wife and youngest son, Steve.

A visitation hour will be held at 10:00am at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church on Saturday February 2, 2019 with the funeral service beginning at 11:00am. Burial will be at Detroit Memorial Park East with repast immediately following at Pleasant Grove.

The arrangements have been entrusted to Swanson Funeral Home, Inc.

Mr. Don was one of the best men I ever knew. He was hysterical and lived his life with integrity. I am blessed to have known him for the short time I did. He will be missed very much.

It was a pleasure and an honor knowing him and being part of his care. He was one of a kind and I will cherish the memories of each time I saw him and the conversations we always had. He definitely had a way of making you laugh even when you were having the worst day. Please know you are all in my thoughts and prayers. He will never be forgotten and although he is now physically gone...his spirit will forever live on.

I remember going over to my Uncle Donald's house as a kid before I became a Pershing Doughboy and playing basketball in the backyard with younger Steve and the neighborhood kids. My late father Ralph Smith would also take me over there as a kid on the holiday's. Rest in Peace to a great man! My condolences to my cousins Steve, Dennis and the rest of the family.

Uncle Donald, I remember all the fun times our family spent together visiting. Especially when Jerrell and myself (Markita) use to catch the Woodward bus to the YMCA to swim on Saturdays. When it was near the point to pull the rope to get off, you would turn of the rope signal to stop and keep goingthen you would turn around and look at us and wink your eye and laugh and say, see you later! While chewing on a toothpick. "Thanks for the ride"..May God be pleased with your work.
Love,
The Burson Family
