I once wrote to Ed Asner asking for an autograph. It was for my brother Dave, who acted as an elf in the Stratford (Ct.) Shakespeare Festival back in the late 1950's. Mr. Asner was there appearing in one of the Bard's plays. I mentioned this to Ed and he not only sent an autographed photo, he penned a note saying that Dave was the cutest elf of all, far cuter than his brother Bill. How sweet and kind of him. Funny, too! R.I.P. Ed Asner.

When I want to get away from this world I turn on Me-TV and there are all my old shows. Definitely Mary Tyler Moore Show. I love all the old shows because it was when people were nicer with good morals and values and life was less complicated. What the world needs now is love. I will do something nice for someone in honor of Ed Asner. My heart Weeps. He was a TV father to me. And I love that movie, up. I cry when his wife died. Ed Asner where is a great performer and shared his life with us. Whatever is bound on Earth is bound in heaven. We have a wonderful savior John 14 Ed Asner is in the arms of Jesus. God Bless America

So tragic to lose three MTM alumni this year, now with only Betty White left.

I can't remember the exact episode, but my favorite moment was when Ted did something unbelievable stupid (even for him). Lou looked at him with crazy eyes and kept repeating "I'm gonna kill you Ted" while Mary tried to mediate.

My sincerest condolences to all of Mr. Asner's family. Being from Kansas City and knowing some of Mr. Asner's relatives through our synagogue I've always been a big fan. I moved to California for college and was doing an internship for Hospice. I watched an episode of Lou Grant regarding Hospice. I wrote Mr. Asner a letter thanking him and the show for a wonderful job promoting Hospice and mentioned I was KC born. To my surprise I received a beautiful handwritten letter and he recognized my last name. It was so kind of him to take the time to write me. I'm certain he will continue his work on the other side.

We were very sorry to learn the news of Mr. Asner’s death. Everyone in our family has always admired his work. And we appreciated so much his personal phone calls to my mom in 2019 wishing her a happy 90th birthday, and letting her know that he was looking forward to reaching that milestone a few months later in November. What a great gift! She still talks about how nice he was, and how wonderful it was of him to call. The world has lost a great man. Deepest sympathy to his family and friends...

On an an overbooked flight from Charlotte to Hartford a few years back, I almost got bumped to the next available plane departing. I was in a complete panic and in tears because I was desperately trying to make it home to Vermont to see my little grandmother before she passed. An older passenger heard the phone conversation between my sister and I, with me explaining that I might be arriving later than expected and my worries that I wouldn't get to see or say goodbye to our grandmother in time. Unbeknownst to me, that gentleman talked to the gate attendant and explained my situation. The attendant approached me with the news that I would indeed be on that flight as originally planned. She then pointed to the elderly passenger and said I had him to thank for "putting in a word". Imagine my surprise when I immediately recognized the man that helped me. I will forever be grateful for the kindness that he went out of his way to extend to a stranger, and will always remember sitting next to him on that flight and talking like we'd known each other for years. Rest in peace Ed Asner Farewell Lou

When Asner began playing Lou Grant on “The Mary Tyler Moore Show,” he gave the character the perfect blend of cranky gruffness and underlying kindheartedness. His character was spun off into his own show, “Lou Grant,” with the unusual switch from the half-hour comedy of “Mary Tyler Moore” to an hour-long drama for “Lou Grant.” Asner won five Emmy Awards for playing Lou Grant across the two series, in addition to two other Emmys for the miniseries “Rich Man, Poor Man” and “Roots,” making him the most honored male performer in Emmy Awards history. Asner appealed to younger generations as he provided the voice of another gruff fellow with a tender heart: Carl Fredricksen in Pixar’s “Up” (2009). Asner also notably played Santa Claus in “Elf” (2003).

Beyond his best-known roles, Asner had hundreds of acting credits in a television and movie career that spanned seven decades. His movies include the Elvis Presley musical “Change of Habit” (1969), “They Call Me Mister Tibbs!” (1970), and “JFK” (1991). On TV, he had recurring roles in “Mad About You,” “ER,” and “Dead to Me,” and he provided voices for many animated series including “Spider-Man: The Animated Series,” “King of the Hill,” “The Boondocks,” and “The Cleveland Show.” And he made guest appearances on shows as diverse as “Gunsmoke,” “The Mod Squad,” “Roseanne,” “The X-Files,” and “Cobra Kai.” Asner was president of the Screen Actors Guild from 1981 to 1985.
