Leszek Walowicz Obituary
Detroit - Leszek "Les" Jan Walowicz was born June 22, 1949 in a refugee camp in Delmenhorset, West Germany. Brought to the USA at the age of two, Les grew up in Detroit and graduated from Chadsey High School in 1967.
He was attending Wayne State University when he felt called to serve and joined the Army in 1968. His Vietnam service as a Combat Crew Chief (128th Aviation Co, Assault Helicopter) and his station in Italy were pinnacle moments in his life. Ultimately he wanted to start his life in Michigan among the lakes and "Up North" life he loved.
He married Karolina Konopka in 1978 and they had two daughters. He loved music and frequently played in bands ranging from blues to bluegrass. He was also a prolific songwriter and poet, a tireless thinker, and a skilled tool and die maker (Chrysler Corp). Les was able to celebrate 40 years of marriage and had two grandchildren.
He is survived by brothers George and Andrew, daughters Katherine (Stone) and Annette (DeLorean) and grandchildren, Charles and April (Stone), who he loved dearly.
A Memorial Visitation will be held Saturday at the Sterling Heights Chapel of the E.J. Mandziuk & Son Funeral Directors, Inc. (3801 18 Mile Rd. NW corner of Ryan) from 9:00 am until 3:00 pm. Tributes and Military Honors will take place from 2:00 pm until 3:00 pm. Please share memories at www.mandziukfuneralhome.com
