Richard Karsten Obituary
RICHARD H. 85 of Sears, passed away on Monday, August 8, 2016. He was born January 27, 1931 in Rogers City, MI to the late Herman and Grace Karsten. He served in the Air Force. On July 11, 1959 he married Mary Vanhala in Southfield. They made their home in Berkley, MI where he was a bank manager throughout the Detroit area. He was preceded by three brothers, Paul, Edmund and Donald. Survivors include: his wife Mary; three sons, Eric (Patricia) of Brighton, Hans (Stephanie) of Midland and Peter (Tina) of Clarkston; eight grandchildren, one great-grand daughter; two sisters, Anita Augsburger and Carleen (Ken) Buchler. Service will be 11:00 a.m., Saturday, August 13, 2016 at Chapel of the Lakes Lutheran Church (9407 90th Ave., Mecosta, MI). Memorials can be made to God's Helping Hands, Juvenile Diabetes Association or Chapel of the Lakes. Care has been entrusted to the Daggett Funeral Home in Barryton and a full obituary is online at

To The Karsten Family,
When I think back on my childhood, the Karsten Family is forever present in my memories. I cherish that all of you were part of my early years and I cherish the memories.

Mrs. Karsten and Family:
As I think of Mr. Karsten I am reminded how lucky our circle of friends is to have caring parents who were actively involved in our lives.
I fondly remember Mr. Karsten being the biggest fan or our adult softball team and I have video reminders of him at our games.
As a father, I have taken my own sons to the UP and shared many of the spots around Curtis that Pete told us that he went to as a child. When walking the long hot path back to C3-Pool fishing spot I constantly told my boys to keep their fishing pole "tips up".

Mary, we are so sorry and sad to learn of Dick's death. We will never forget all the good times we had in St.Augustine and consider ourselves blessed to have known him. His strong and active faith, his love of family and fishing are some of the many things we will remember about him. Know that you and your family are in our prayers.
