David B. Karlin, 61, of Fremont died Saturday, April 17, 2010, at Immanuel Medical Center in Omaha.
He was born May 14, 1948, in Fremont to Norman and Dorothy (Hanel) Karlin. He grew up in Fremont and was a 1966 graduate of Fremont High School. He attended a mechanics school in Omaha. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War from April 19, 1968, to April 18, 1972. When he returned to Fremont he worked in the carpet business with his father and uncles owning "Karlin What Next" for several years. He later worked for the Fremont Gas Market and Nielsen Towing as a tow-truck driver. He also worked at Valmont Industries and Caterpillar in Omaha. His last business venture was with his wife, where they owned a ceramic shop in Fremont until 1998. He then drove a semi-truck until 2002.
He married Odessa Bivens on April 10, 1971, and accepted the role of father to her two children. She died in 1981. He then married Mildred "Mickie" Mallia of Blair on Nov. 23, 1985, and again accepted the role of father to her three children.
He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Fremont. He was a trustee at the Fremont Eagles Club, where he prepared many of the breakfast events.
Survivors include: his wife, Mildred "Mickie"; two brothers, Stuart (and wife, Phyllis) Karlin of Missouri Valley, Iowa, and Dan (and wife, Margaret) Karlin of Detroit; stepsons, John Bivens, Charlie (and wife, Michelle) Mallia and Joseph Mallia, all of Fremont; stepdaughters, Jo (and husband, George) Potter and Kathy Mallia, all of Fremont; 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
The memorial service will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Moser Memorial Chapel in Fremont with Teacher Joan Porter of Community of Christ Church in Fremont officiating. There is no viewing, however, friends may sign the register book and the family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Memorial Cemetery in Fremont. Military graveside services will be conducted by the Fremont Honor Guard of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 854 and American Legion Post 20.
