JESSE H. SPORHASE
1923-2017
Jesse H. Sporhase was born January 4, 1923 at his parent's home south west of Otoe, NE. His parents were John and Anna (Ehlers) Sporhase. He graduated from Otoe High School in May 1942, where he was All State in football. After graduation, he entered the Navy and was sworn in at the State Fair in Lincoln Sept. 9, 1942. He served abroard the USS Solace, a hospital ship, in the Pacific Theatre and at Pacco Air Base in Washington. He was discharged Christmas Eve, 1945 in St. Louis, MO. He served as a ship fitter.
He married Doris Lorenzen August 27, 1946 in Hiawatha, KS. He graduated from Ranken School of Mechanical Trades in St. Louis, MO in February 1948. He apprenticed at Faye Deines Plumbing & Heating in Lincoln, NE. and moved to Syracuse in April 1949, where he started the J.H. Sporhase Plumbing and Heating business.
Jess served on the Syracuse City Council as President and was also the President of the Syracuse Chamber of Commerce. He was Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 337 and served as the First Commander of the VFW Post 5547 in 1951 and again in 1991. He served as VFW District 6 Commander and also held electoral VFW Department offices and National and Department appointments. He was Commander of Legion Post 100, served on the Vets Club Board, & County Veterans Board. He served on the Good Samaritan Board 16 years and was on the original board when it was built. He served on the Selective Service Board, was President of the Park Hill Cemetery Board and Chairman of the Parade of Flags and Veteran's Memorial at Park Hill Cemetery. He was also a member of the Cooties and Masons.
Jesse passed away on Monday, January 30, 2017 at Community Memorial Hospital in Syracuse. He is survived by son Bradley & daughter-in-law Beverly; daughter Deanna; grandson Jonathan and wife Stephanie; great-grandson, Wesley; one sister-in-law, Norma Sporhase; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by 4 sisters, 6 brothers, and his wife.
Pallbearers were Jon Sporhase, Merna Irland, David Fannon, John Pabst, Greg Zahn and Ron Zahn.
Funeral was held Saturday, February 4, 2017, 10:30 A.M. at Luther Memorial Church in Syracuse.
Burial was at Park Hill Cemetery in Syracuse, NE.
Memorials are suggested to the Otoe Cemetery.
