Thomas Stover Obituary

January 27, 1941 – November 25, 2021
Thomas Ward Stover, one-of-a-kind, epic family man, sports fanatic, and head cheerleader for the underdog, died on Thursday, Nov. 25, 2021, from complications of COVID-19.
Tom was born on Jan. 27, 1941, in Norfolk, Nebraska, to Wayne ""Smokey"" and Loretta (Prenger) Stover. Tom graduated from Norfolk Catholic High School in 1959. He attended South Dakota School of Mines & Technology and graduated from Wayne State College in 1963. Tom met Lois ""Lou"" Timperley at the Double K restaurant in Norfolk, Nebraska, in 1961, which was the luckiest night of his life. They were married on Sept. 9, 1961. After they were married, they moved to Fremont, Nebraska, where they raised their four children. They lived a life of laughter and love; and maybe a few late nights of Lou waiting for Tom to finish his last ""Coors Delight"" before heading home. He liked to call the last drink of the night ""one for the ditch."" Lou was standing at his bedside, holding his hand, when Tom took his last breath.
Tom was employed at JayHawk Box Company until his retirement in 2006. In his 80 years of life, Tom touched many, many people. He served on several boards, announced the Fremont Bergan football games, coached the McDonald's Cougars softball team, and probably bought a beer for the majority of people reading this. As an avid golfer, his goal was to have 6 hole-in-ones, so he could say he had a 6-pack. He made it to five. His last hole-in-one will be with Jesus as his caddy.
He took extreme pride in his four children, 10 grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren. As a former college athlete he taught them the value of having passion for life and a strong work ethic. His favorite life advice was: ""You gotta have fire in your belly.""
Tom is survived by his wife, Lois; son, Todd (Jill) Stover of Omaha, Nebraska; daughters, Kris (Brad) Love of Norfolk, Stacia Anderson, Stephanie (Mitch) Johnson, all of Lincoln, Nebraska; brothers, Gary Stover, Steve (Kathy) Stover; sisters, Sue (Glen) Fuchtman, Mary (Bill) Nelson, all of Norfolk; 10 grandchildren, Brooke Johnson, Schyler Johnson, Kennedy Johnson, Brittany (Jake) Wesch, Jonathan (Audrey) Love, Christopher Stover, Calvin Stover, Cassie Stover, Walker Anderson, and Chase Anderson; and 4 great-grandchildren, Mack, Marlo, and Scout Wesch and Willa Love.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
It is not lost on his family that he died the very day that we gather to give thanks. Anyone who knew and loved Tom was grateful to call him a friend.
FUNERAL MASS is POSTPONED! New dates will be announced when available.
Memorials may be directed to Archbishop Bergan Schools. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you will do an unexpected and unsolicited act of kindness for someone less fortunate in his name.

I heard of the passing of Tom from friends while visiting my own grandchildren, daughter and son-in-law over the Thanksgiving holidays. After reading his wonderful bio I have to agree that he passed away on a very appropriate day. I worked for Hormel in Fremont for 27 years and Tom represented Jayhawk Boxes across the street. During that lengthy time Tom and the Jaywawk staff took such good care of us it seemed they all worked for Hormel too. It is hard to wrap up someones life in only one sentence but he was always happy, always helpful no matter what was asked of him and set a very high bar for service and kindness. I was proud to know him and the Stover family should be extremely proud of him. He once told me the most difficult time he ever had was trying to be on a diet and smelling his mothers cinnamon rolls come out of the oven. He actually got in his car and drove down the street to try and gather strength to resist! I don't know if he drive home or back to his mothers but a nice story.

God bless all the Stover family as Tom, the head of your family, was a special man and will be missed by all.

I'm so sorry for your loss. Tom will be missed! I could count on him every year to help with our golf tournament, and I enjoyed connecting with him each year. He was a great supporter of Fremont Habitat, and the organization will miss him, as will I, personally! Keeping your family in my prayers.
