CHARLES SMITH Obituary

Charles W. Smith, family man, outdoorsman and member of an early Clovis family, passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 12, 2015, in Fresno, CA. He was 83. Chuck was born in 1932, to Charles and Carol (Hauert) Smith. A graduate in the Clovis High School, Class of 1951, Chuck played tennis and was active in the FFA. After serving with the United States Army's 2nd Infantry Division in Korea, Chuck returned home to attend Fresno State where he studied Dairy Science, was an active member of Sigma Chi Fraternity, and met the love of his life Cynthia Bower. They were married after graduation; recently celebrating their 58 year anniversary. Chuck had a 35 year career as a California Highway Patrolman and Investigator with the Department of Motor Vehicles based in Fresno. In retirement, Chuck and Cindy split their time between travel, their mountain cabin and volunteering with the National Park Service, San Joaquin River Conservancy and Clovis Historical Museum. Chuck loved to see the world, hunt and fish, and will be remembered for his pies, his sense of humor and for sharing the great outdoors with everyone he met. Chuck is survived by his wife Cynthia; daughter and son-in-law, Cheri and Michael Berg of Fresno; son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Diane Smith of Vacaville, CA; and five beautiful granddaughters, Kristen and Jaclyn Berg, and Katie, Kelly and Carrie Smith. A Memorial Service will be held at Northwest Church, Fresno, CA on Friday, September 25, 2015, at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests remembrances be made to The Yosemite Conservancy, www.yose miteconservancy.org.
