GEORGE THORPE Obituary

George passed away on Monday July 30, 2012, of natural causes at his home near Madera Ca. George was born September 24, 1926, in Gridley Ca. He grew up with two brothers and one sister at their family farm near Stockton, Ca. The family moved to Los Banos, Ca. during George's High School years. George served in the U.S. Army in the Pacific Theater during WWII for two years and after the war returned to Los Banos where he married Rose Cunha in 1950. George took a job with Pacific Gas and Electric and his job led him to Firebaugh where he and Rose started their family of two boys. George lived in Firebaugh for over 40 years where he was active, kind, and quietly generous to the whole community. Whenever there was electrical trouble, everyone would call George directly knowing that he would quickly fix the problem. After retiring from PG&E, he and Rose moved to Ft Bragg, Ca., where he built a house in the redwoods and started a casual second career in commercial fishing and restoring fishing boats. After 15 years on the coast, George and Rose returned to the valley and built a house on farmland near Madera, Ca. where George continued to be active, right up to the day of his passing. George had a multitude of interests, from being a private pilot, to fishing in Alaska and Oregon, to restoring cars, metal and woodworking, cruises through the Panama Canal and the Baltic Sea. Those that know George also know that his life cannot be summarized in a few paragraphs. We are all better off for having known him. He is survived by his two sons; his wife Rose; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Viewing will be at Whitehurst Chapel, 16524 Center Ave. in Los Banos on Sunday, August 12, 2012, at 12:00 noon. A wake follows in banquet room at M&M Restaurant, 400 Pacheco Blvd. in Los Banos at 3:00 p.m.

Rosie, I've always considered growing up in Firebaugh as special and unique, and you and George as next door neighbors for 15 years were definitely part of it. I have two vivid memories of George. One was out in his shop when he was showing me how he used old transformer oil as a very effective rust remover and solvent. And he added, "and you don't want to get it on anything you want to keep, including your shoes" as he pointed to the old work boots he had on that were riddled with holes from the stuff. We had a good laugh over that. The other is the memory of George driving us kids all around town and the levee road over by the park, like a maniac, in that little BMW Isetta you guys had for a while.
Rosie, my heart and prayers go out to you and the kids. Pat Phillips

My sincerest condolances to Rose and the Family. It was my pleasure to have known both George and Rose during my many years in Firebaugh. They were always a happy fun loving couple in every endeavor they undertook. May George rest in peace. May his family continue to recall with pleasure their life with George.

Blessings to you Rose, and boys. Rosie(as I remember you), you and George were always welcoming and provided long standing memories of my childhood in Firebaugh. Living next door to them was a treat. You never knew what project George would be dedicating his creative mind to next...but you knew it would be cool. His shop was like Disneyland! I recall the player piano and even a merry-go-round type 'ride' that was suspended from a tree in the back yard, all built and/or restored by George.
George definately made the world a better place and everyone around him always 'learned' something. I, too, wish I could have seen more of the Thorpes over the past 45+ years.
In the days to come, may the hurt in your hearts be quickly replaced and repaired by the many fond memories of your George.
Condolences from the entire Phillips family.

Hi Rosie, I always thought of George as a really cool guy. Growing up across the street from you, I could wander over as a kid and see George working on an airplane, old motorcycle or even a piano! Wish I could have known you both more in the past 50 years. My love to you and yours, Steve Kubeck

We are so sorry to hear of your loss. The thoughts of many are with you at this time of sorrow.
While working on the West Side, the highlight of the day was running to George. Always with a smile and ready to help out. He was one of the Great Ones.
