I am completely saddened to learn of Kris's death.
I knew her in Sierra Leone in 1982-84 when she was just starting her fieldwork in Kainkordu and I was teaching at Fourah Bay College.
She was always a bright light, and I am sorry that I did not keep in touch with her.

I recently learned of Kris's passing. Kris and I were roommates, and shared a drafty old house together for one or two years while attending school in Indiana. We had wonderful dinners and gatherings there with other students, visiting faculty, drop-ins and who-knows-who, with everyone wanting to be around the house -- all credit for the warmth and fantastic cooking going to Kris. She taught me how to make chicken curry casserole, which remains one of my best dishes! I left Indiana long ago, and Kris went on to complete her studies in West Africa. But I have always remembered the time we shared in that old house, and the wonderful nights of sitting around a table philosophizing, laughing and eating Kris's great cooking -- outside the Indiana winter winds howling in the dark. So sorry to learn of Kris's passing.

I have only just now learned of Kris' death, from another friend from graduate school at Indiana, where all three of us were studying anthropology. Kris and I were both part of a cohort studying the arts--she was working on art-making and I was doing ethnomusicology and dance--and both of us were working with Ivan Karp. She was a quiet but strong and wise presence. Her serenity and grace were wonderful to be around. I am sad that we lost touch after Indiana, as I have been in the UK since 1986 and teaching at University of Sussex in Brighton since 1991, so seeing her strong connections with London, our paths could have crossed. I would have liked to celebrate with her some of her many amazing honours there. In any case, I am happy to leave a few words of appreciation for the kind and delightful person that I remember so fondly.

The very first day I met Kris, I wished that I had a magic wand so that I can make her pain goes away. She was a beautiful, kind and respectful person. Her soft voice and her beautiful smile touches my heart. Kris became a very special to me and I wanted to help her continue on but God decided to take her home.
Michael, my deeply sympathy to you and family. I have just found out after returning from New Zealand. I thought of both of you and the beautiful book you both autographed for me. My prayers are with you. I'm here for you if you ever need a helping hand. May the blessings of god be with you always Muchael.
Rest in Peace Kris

I was very sorry to hear of Kris' passing. She was a good friend to me when we were young and in Job's Daughters together. I remember that she drove me around in her car to practices and to meetings and we did a lot of stuff that you do in high school that is amusing or even hilarious. She was always kind and fun to be with. I can still see her smile and hear her laugh. She accomplished a lot in her life and achieved tremendous honors. All the character and qualities that it takes to do that she had when I knew her;she used all of her talents and gifts for good. It is an honor to have known her.
To Eleanor,Doug and Michael: May God be with you and give you His comfort and love.
My mom sends her love and prayers. Your family has held a special place in our hearts.

Kris inspired my daughter to study anthropology. For that, I am truly grateful. Though I only met her once, I knew she was a gentle person with an old soul.

Kris was a truly beautiful, kind, intelligent woman with a wonderful sense of humor and amazing spirit. My heart aches that she is gone but takes solace in the fact Kris squeezed more into her short time than most of us will in a very long lifetime. Rest in Peace, Kris, you are missed already.
