Michael was born on May 26, 1988, in Selma, Ca. to Donna Allen of Caruthers and Ray East of Sanger. He passed away on Thursday, October 28, 2010, at the age of 22. He grew up with the love and support from family in Caruthers, Fresno, and Sanger. As a child, Michael loved Legos and the Ninja Turtles, and of course, had to be "Michaelangelo". He attended school in Fresno and was involved in a wide variety of sports and activities, with football being his favorite. Michael was a three-year varsity starter for Edison High School and made The Fresno Bee and local news as "Offensive Player of the Week". He graduated from Edison in 2007. Michael loved to hunt and fish with family and friends. He always made his presence known and left a lasting impression on everyone who met him. Michael joined the United States Marine Corps on December 13, 2008, and attended Boot Camp at San Diego's MCRD. After graduation on March 13, 2009, he went through the School of Infantry at Camp Pendleton and was then stationed at Twentynine Palms with the 3rd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment as a machine gunner for India Company. He was a tough Marine, but also a practical joker who kept everyone on their toes and laughing. On April 1, 2010, Michael was sent overseas to serve in the Sangin Valley, Helmand Province, of Afghanistan. While there, he served our country and the Corps with honor, courage, and distinction. During his final mission, Michael was wounded through his left calf. He was awarded the Purple Heart on October 14th by the Commandant of the Marine Corps in Bethesda, Maryland. He was home on convalescent leave, when he was involved in a fatal single car accident. Michael's Marine brothers called him a hero for his actions in combat and he is pending an award for bravery. Michael will be sorely missed, always loved, and never forgotten by his family, friends, and brothers in arms. He fought the good fight for freedom and liberty. Michael was truly an American Hero. Michael is survived by his wife, Laura Allen; his parents; grandparents, Dennis and Sharon East, and Leroy and Eleanor Ginther; great-grandmother, Frieda Scheidt; three aunts; three uncles; seven sisters; four brothers; and a large extended family including his Marine brothers of 3/7 "Semper Fi". Visitation will be held at Wallin's Sanger Funeral Home in Sanger, Ca. on Thursday, November 11, 2010, from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. A Graveside Service will be held at Sanger Cemetery on Friday, November 12, 2010, at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Marine Corps Toys for Tots in Michael's name to the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve, 5313 E. My heart goes out to you and your family at this time. Michael sounds like a wonderful man who brought such joy to the lives around him. He did so much and loved so many in his very short life. When Steven passed away, it brought me great comfort in knowing how many people's lives he touched. I hope it brings you some comfort as well.
