Raymond Lung Obituary

Raymond Henry Lung passed away at home on Saturday, June 13, 2009. Not one to give up on anything, he confronted his leukemia with the same determination and fight that served him well for 82 years.

Ray was born on December 24, 1926 in Fresno, California to Daniel and Anna Lung. The youngest of three children, Ray enjoyed the attentions of his sister Esther and brother Gene. He excelled at athletics, focusing on baseball and football. At age 17, Ray left high school early to enlist in the Merchant Marines just before the end of W.W.II.

After the war, Ray returned to Fresno and started college at Fresno State College. He played football for two years before catching the eye of University of Oregon coaches. Transferring to Oregon brought him to Eugene where he joined Beta Theta Pi fraternity. He was Captain of the 1950 team and named winner of the Hoffman Award, the teams most outstanding player. Ray also represented the Ducks at the 1950 East-West Shrine game. Although Ray was drafted by the San Francisco 49ers, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and served in the Korean War.

In 1951, Ray married Jacqueline Kurtz., and was the father of two daughters, Julie Ann and Mary Elizabeth.

Ray attended Northwestern School of Law and began his career with U.S. Bank in Portland, Oregon. He received his law degree and passed the Oregon State Bar in 1957. After 38 years with the bank, Ray retired in 1991 as Executive Vice Presidents and Manager of the Trust Group.

Ray is survived by his wife Jacquie; daughters Mary Rardin and Julie Sorenson; son-in-law Dave Sorenson; and grandson Andrew, all of Portland; brother, Gene Lung of Fresno, California; and sister, Esther Ruth, of Aptos, California.

There will be no memorial service, and a Celebration of Ray's Life will be held later this summer in Portland.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Duck Athletic Fund, 2727 Leo Harris Pkwy., Eugene, Or., 97401, or to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Oregon Chapter, 9320 S.W. Barbur Blvd., Portland, Or., 97219.

Jacquie,
My thoughts and prayers are for you and the girls.
Of the many people I've know and admired over my life Ray is in a special place. The duck and quail hunting, golf and fly fishing were important to our relationship but mostly it was just Ray. A very special person. Intelligent, firm in his convictions, great sense of humor, wonderful family, a really positive example to his fellow man. Our contact over the past years was much less than it should have been but that doesn't alter the fact that I'll miss him.

Mary, I was so grateful to talk to you today, and so surprised to hear of your Dad's passing! I will always remember his enthusiasm for life! You had a great Dad! Perhaps Irene will end up at U of O and share his enthusiasm for the Ducks! I spoke with Mom later and we are going to try to plan a trip in August, and hopefully when you are there! My love to your Mom and Julie, Sonja Bakke Lahana

Jacquie, Julie, Dave & Mary,
I have been wanting to call and talk with you ever since I heard about Ray. I'm so very sorry for your loss and that I wasn't able to come up with Gene, on one of his many trips to Portland to visit you all. I know we'll get together again, and sooner than later. All my love to you all,
