Ruby Palmer Obituary

RUBY LEIGH PALMER Ruby was born to Charles and Leora Ferguson in Covington, KY on December 4, 1909. When Ruby was two years old, her mother died and her father traveled from Kentucky to California with her on a train to his mother in Fresno. After some years in the care of her grandmother, Ruby was pleased to have a new mother, Frances Papp Ferguson. From this new family came two brothers and three sisters. Ruby attended the Eastside Christian Church and there met her future husband, Victor Charles Palmer. They were married in 1928, and not only were they partners in marriage, but during WWII, they started Palmer's Nursery on the corner of Belmont and Maple. In later years they started Belmont Nursery. Ruby and Vic had three children, Doris, Jerry and Jim. Jim owned and operated Palmer's Nursery until it was sold, and upon Ruby's retirement, Jerry and his wife Varrel owned and operated Belmont Nursery until it was sold. It was in this Nursery that Ruby worked until she was 81 years old. In her last years, she enjoyed traveling, gardening and her church, Northside Christian. Several years ago her youngest brother Ed preceded her in death. She will be fondly remembered by her brother, Charles Ferguson and his wife Leona; her sister, Emma McFadden; her sister, Helen Olsen; and her sister, Eleanor Henry and her husband Bob. Ruby will be greatly missed by her daughter, Doris Shaffer and her husband Barney; her son Jerry and his wife Varrel; and her son Jim and his wife Ann of Norman, OK. She also leaves behind four grandsons; many great-grandchildren; and two great- great granddaughters. A Graveside Service will be at Clovis District Cemetery on Friday, November 19, 2004, at 12:00 noon. alm2,,100,p PALM COLONIAL FUNERAL HOME2983 Tulare Street(559) 233-7267

I lived on the SW corner of Temperance and Olive, and in 1949 helped Vic plant walnut trees, 2 nuts to a hole. Fond, fond memories of Fancher Creek. Darroll Batten

The summers I spent with Marty & Mitch at "grandmaw's" house where so wonderfull. Ruby was so positive, loving & forgiving when we created havoc at the nursery. Its still so memerorable, simming in the ditch, playing in the huge backyard, driving the golf cart around nursery and the lunches Ruby made for us. She was a special lady who will be missed by many. My thoughts & prayers are with all of you at this difficult time.

We have known Ruby for more than 30 years, having attended and worshipped together at the North Fresno Christian Church. currently known as the Northside Christian Church. We have admired Ruby for her vim and vigor and hard work. She was a student of the Bible and loved her Lord. She loved her husband, Charles, or as we knew him, "Vic", and they enjoyed a life together raising their family and operating their nurseries. Ruby lived a full, abundant life and was loved by those of us who knew her and know that she will be missed by her family and friends.
