He was a farmer who climbed the ladders alongside his workers. He spoke some Spanish and kidded his workers but also praised them when they quit drinking, or did a good job. What I'm most reminded of is at the end of a day of picking, sorting & packing fruit, he sat down and remarked, "War is bad, really bad." He saw it first hand, told me countless times of the indignities African-American troops endured that he witnessed. With tree fruit prices dwindling, problems with obtaining good farm labor, and sending his kid(s) to college, inflation etc., I'll always remember this man who'd seen it firsthand, "War is really bad."

My sympathy to the family on the loss of Shig. I enjoyed knowing him and did not know of his great contribution during WW two until reading his biography. He will be missed. Sincerely, Paulette Janian
