I can never forget when, in 1966, as football coach at Fresno High School, Vance came to the house of my poor immigrant parents and convinced them I should play football if they hoped for me to get a college scholarship. I am forever grateful for Vance's extra effort, else I would not have had my education at Stanford nor my career in geophysics. Vance was a great coach, educator, and motivator. Thanks, Coach, thanks.
