Lawrence Medland Obituary

Larry (Lawrence David) Medland died May 31, 2025 in Wasilla, Alaska. He was born March 5, 1940 in Logansport, IN to Ed and Babe Walsh Medland. Throughout his life Larry made great eorts to maintain close family ties. He is survived by sister Marilyn and husband Mike May (Gleneden Beach, OR), brother Pat and wife Suse (Bloomington, IN), and sister Lee Nix and husband Dave (Pendleton, IN). Nieces and nephews include: Michelle Foss (Brian), Jason May, Nate Medland (Megan), Suzanne Nix, Colleen Rodino (Tony), and Elizabeth McConnell (Max). Uncle Larry was a favorite with them. His Christmas gifts were legendary.
The family wishes to especially thank Michelle, Brian, and their children Hannah and Hayden of Anchorage, AK for their loving care for Larry in recent years.
After graduating from Purdue University with a degree in chemistry, Larry served two years in the U.S. Army and shortly thereafter began a 35 year career as a chemist with the CTS Corporation in W. Lafayette, IN. He found his work fulfilling and developed several lifelong friends there.
Larry had many great interests. He was an enthusiastic fan of the Chicago Bears, L.A. Dodgers, Purdue Boilermakers, Chicago Blackhawks, and Alaska Aces. He followed the weather avidly and read widely about all things Alaska.
Perhaps Larry's greatest passion was adventurous travels. He began these journeys with whitewater rafting and hiking in the Appalachians and Rockies. This expanded to annual hiking and canoeing treks to northern wilderness areas including Alaska, the Arctic Circle, Yukon Territory, Greenland, Russia and more.
When he retired at age 60 he moved to Wasilla, Alaska where he greatly enjoyed living for 25 years. He delighted in handing out his business cards with his name and "Retired to Alaska." Larry was a convivial person who liked to spend time with good friends at a favorite "watering hole" (most recently Tailgater's in Wasilla) sharing stories, watching sports on tv, and quaffing a cold brew.
We invite those who knew and loved Larry to raise a toast in his honor.
