Stephen Brown Obituary

Stephen Castlebury Brown
October 17, 1963 - February 23, 2025
Our beloved Stephen Castlebury Brown passed into eternity on February 23, 2025 in Palmer, Alaska. He was born October 17, 1963 in San Antonio, Texas to Leon and Josephine Brown.
Stephen was raised in Vernon, Texas and grew up with a love of the great outdoors, beginning his amazing mountain climbing career as a Boy Scout, attaining the rank of Eagle Scout. He dropped out of high school early on to pursue higher education, beginning at Vernon Regional Junior College, where he received an Associate in Physical Science. A devoted Aggie, Stephen graduated from Texas A&M University with a B.S. (Recreation and Parks Management). The University of Texas at San Antonio conferred an M.S. in Environmental Science upon Steve, which was then followed by a Ph.D. in the same field by SUNY ESF. Not bad for a high school dropout!
Stephen was a Professor of Agriculture with the Cooperative Extension Service at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. He was a past President and Director of the Alaska State Fair. A consummate teacher, Stephen loved sharing his knowledge of agriculture in his previous positions at Alaska Bible College, Kansas State University, UTSA, and Cornell University.
Some of the popular classes Stephen taught included Chicken University, Growing Giant Cabbages, and GIS/GPS. His latest passion was helping conduct rhodiola research. Many of his students began their agriculture and GIS careers as a result of his mentorship.
Steve was passionate about mountaineering, summitting peaks on five continents, including Denali, Aconcagua, Kilimanjaro, Mt. Elbrus, Stok Kangri, and many more. To stay in shape, Steve ran several dozen marathons, completing them in 37 states. He loved snow machining, motorcycles, and enjoyed acting in community theater. Stephen was widely known for his sense of humor and telling tall tales.
Stephen is survived by his wife Eva Cohnen-Brown, brother Hart Brown and sister-in-law Susan, brother McKee Smith and sister-in-law Maria Smith, nephew Joshua Azbell, niece Heather Perez, sister-in-law Jeany Cohnen, and numerous great nieces and nephews.
May your memory continue to be a blessing, dear Steve. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date in Palmer, Alaska.
In lieu of flowers, feel free to donate to a worthy cause, or to contribute to one of Steve's favorite groups: the Alaska Bible College in Palmer, Alaska, or the NACAA (National Association of County Agricultural Agents).

Steve was a remarkable man and I'm so grateful for the privilege of his friendship. His legacy is deep and wide -- the countless students he influenced, the unforgettable stories and anecdotes he loved to tell, his infectious smile and laughter, and the boundless energy with which he tackled everything in his sights. He was an inspiration to all who knew him. Our hearts are broken with yours at his sudden departure, but because of his faith and ours, we're confident in our inevitable reunion, the unspeakable joy that we will share on that day, and the thrill of new adventures that await us in that far country.

Remembering Steve Brown

Steve Brown was a remarkable friend, a master storyteller, and a constant source of inspiration. His smile and unwavering cheerfulness encouraged me to strive for more-to live with greater purpose and meaning.

Steve had an insatiable curiosity and a relentless drive to improve not only himself but those around him. Whether it was working to determine the location of space shuttle parts after the tragic Challenger accident, teaching others how to grow worms to enrich garden soil, or conducting research on Rhodiola rosea, his efforts were always aimed at bettering the world.

His dedication to efficiency never ceased to amaze me. I was always astounded when he´d return from a business trip to the Lower 48, only to learn that, in addition to his work, he had managed to run not just one marathon-but two. He would complete one on a Saturday in one state, then another on Sunday in the neighboring state, all in pursuit of his goal to run a marathon in every state. His drive and endurance were truly extraordinary.

I know I will think of him when I set off to climb Kilimanjaro one day. Steve had that kind of impact-his passion and adventurous spirit live on in those he touched.

One of my favorite memories of him is from the Alaska State Fair in Palmer. I can´t quite recall the exact mechanics of the bike contraption he was riding-was it pedaling forward while somehow moving backward? Or were there four bikes welded together, each rider moving in a different direction? I may not remember the details, but I remember the joy I felt watching him, thinking, There goes my friend Steve Brown-what an amazing man.

Steve, you are missed. But your spirit, your laughter, and your boundless enthusiasm for life will always be remembered.

Steve was an engaging speaker for our local garden club. He imparted knowledge with a twist of humor and a bit of personal experience that helped us remember the content. Steve brought a dozen eggs as a door prize on occasions he spoke. Steve had a wealth of community resource & networking knowledge. He encouraged our members to share their knowledge and years of gardening wisdom with others to help ensure food security. Steve will truly leave some shoes too big to fill. Happy Trails my friend!
