Sara Dowden Obituary

Sara Scott Dowden, 81, of Frankfort, Indiana, died peacefully at home, on August 18, 2025. Sara was born in Frankfort on August 8,1944 to Walter and Lenore Scott. She grew up a self-proclaimed tomboy with her brother Jay in the Scott's unique home on Burlington Avenue. Upon graduating from Frankfort Senior High School with honors in 1962, she went to Indiana University. Her first marriage to Jim Rumpza in 1965 gave her Jeffrey Scott and Jennifer Rumpza, whom she loved immensely.

Sara spent the 1970's caring for her parents and raising her children, gardening, and monogramming shirts and coats for the factories while also working at the local sewing store, Wainscotts. She attended the First Presbyterian Church. For fun she threw parties, played guitar and piano, read many novels, ran for councilwoman, and finally, with a couple of business partners, opened up the Common Grounds to support her family in 1980. A waitress for much of her life, she was known by many in Frankfort. Sara worked at the Common Grounds until it closed and continued at other local establishments until her retirement at 67. She loved the community and enjoyed serving them in this way.

Sara settled down with her second husband, Mike Dowden, in his home in the 1980's, building a greenhouse and creating beautiful gardens, until his death in 2018. In addition to having an exceptional green thumb, she was a master seamstress, an amazing cook, and an avid bowler. Highly competitive, she competed in many bowling leagues and spoke fondly of all her bowling partners. She was also a "genius" at Scrabble.

After Mike's death, she returned to the family home on Burlington Avenue where she lived her final years with a late love of her life, "the only man to treat me like a queen", Phil O'Dell, until his death in 2023. Her family is happy she found that kind of love.

Recently, when asked how she managed to organize all the Christmas gatherings, decorations, gifts and make such great food, she remarked, with her wide-open face and beautiful smile, "I loved every minute of it."

Deep gratitude to her caretaker, Gina Richardson, and her son Finn, who showed so much love and dedication to Sara in her final years.

She is survived by her son, Jeffrey Scott Rumpza, of Lafayette, her daughter, Jennifer Rumpza, of Provincetown, Massachusetts and grandson Sam Rumpza and his wife Sarah Simon of Chicago. She also leaves two beautiful cats and a chihuahua.

In addition to her parents and husbands, she was predeceased by her brother Jay Scott in 1968 and her daughter-in-law, Debra (nee Herbert) Rumpza in 2021.

She looked forward to the approaching arrival in September of her great granddaughter, Eleanor Jane Rumpza.

Visitation will be 12 Noon-2 p.m., Friday, August 22, 2025 at Goodwin Funeral Home, 200 S.
