Charles Rowan Obituary

Charles Franklin Rowan Sr., 93, Attalla, Ala., passed away Friday, July 3, 2015, at his home surrounded by his loved ones. He has joyfully been reunited with his loving wife, Jean.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. today at Morgan Funeral Chapel, 625 Gilbert's Ferry Road S.E., Attalla, AL 35954.
The Reverend Earl Mitchell will be officiating. Burial ceremony for family will follow at Forrest Cemetery in Gadsden. Friends may call from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Mr. Rowan was born September 21, 1921 in Attalla, Ala., to Dewey and Emma (Killian) Rowan. He is a graduate of Etowah High School class of '39, where he served as class vice president and co-wrote the Etowah student creed. He was a WWII veteran and served as a Senior Aircraft Mechanic at Pearl Harbor/Hickam Field.
On July 12, 1947, he married the love of his life, Dorothy Jean Morrow of Uniontown, Pa.
Mr. Rowan was a distinguished 34-year employee of the United States Postal Service, where he received numerous recognitions throughout his career. After retirement, he held the positions of President of the Family Savings Federal Credit Union and Attalla Housing Authority Board Chairman.
Mr. Rowan was also employed by the Attalla City School System. He was a Gold Circle Member of the V.F.W. as well as a member of the American Legion. Mr. Rowan was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church of Attalla. He was a lifetime deacon, Sunday school Director, Training Union Director, and Head of the Brotherhood among other positions within the church.
Mr. Rowan is survived by his sister, Gloria Kelley of St. Simons Island, Ga.; loving children, Donna Martinez (Guillermo) of Queretaro, Mexico, Debra Battles (Wayne) Gadsden, Ala., Charles Rowan Jr. of Attalla, Ala.; devoted grandson Steven Charles Martinez (Morgan) and adoring great-granddaughter Mia Isabella Jean Martinez; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his loving wife Dorothy Jean Rowan; his parents, Dewey and Emma Rowan; two brothers, Harold Rowan and Clay Rowan.
Pallbearers will be Clay Rowan Jr., Ronnie Rowan, Ricky Rowan, Michael Kelley, Tony Thomas, Joshua Burns, Kevin Burns and Bobby Lankford. Honorary Pallbearer will be his lifelong friend, Mr. Henry Graham.
The family wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks to the nurses, doctors and staff of Gentiva Hospice; especially the angels who answered the call in our time of need – Rod Stephens, Verline Hampton and Kim Glass.
