Marjorie Ashley Obituary

Marjorie "Marge" Scott Ashley

Marjorie "Marge" Scott Ashley, age 92, died on June 26, 2021. She was preceded in death by her parents, Marvin and Nettie Scott; her sisters, Dorothy Gray and Dee Scott; her husband, William Robert "Bill" Ashley; and her son, Larry Frank Ashley. Surviving are daughter-in-law Tommie Hall Ashley, sons Scott (Connie) Ashley and Andy Ashley; grandchildren Kendra (Jonathan) Smith, Joshua Ashley, Zachary (Lisa) Ashley, Carolyn (Bryan) Thompson, Victoria (Nathan) Searer; great-grandchildren Daniel (Laura) Kenders, Karis (Michael) Watts, Micah Edmonds, Olivia Ashley, Cade Ashley, William Ashley, Cannon Clark, Austyn Clark, Kaleb Thompson, Morgan Thompson, Levi Thompson,Carolyn Searer, Rowdy Searer, Ava Searer, Emma Searer; great-great-grandchildren Elenor Watts and Benjamin Watts.

A celebration of Marge's life is planned for around Thanksgiving and what would've been her 93rd birthday. While it will be family-centered, anyone who desires to attend (in person or remotely) will be welcomed.

Marge was a dedicated family matriarch and a friend to many. She was known for her kindness and for her deep curiosity about history, genealogy, archaeology and science. Had she lived a few more years, her family is convinced she would've read everything on the Internet.

She was also known for her creativity. Many have enjoyed the stories Marge wrote or admired one of her beautiful hand-stitched quilts. For decades, much of her energy and talent were spent gardening, landscaping, painting, and repurposing or restoring items no longer considered useful. She had a knack for seeing value where others did not.

Marge enjoyed traveling and gave herself the nickname "Marjo Polo" when she wrote of the places she saw. During her life, she visited England, Scotland, Italy, Switzerland, Israel, Egypt, Jordan, Turkey, Greece and Mexico, as well as many U.S. states. She was an avid student of the Bible and a dedicated member of the United Church of God, where she regularly attended services until the last year of her life.

In the years after Bill passed, Marge would often say, "You don't stop missing a person you loved; you just become more used to missing them." We may become more used to it, but we will certainly miss her.

Although I did not see her in person for many years (probably since my early visits to Alabama to my mother´s home area (Marge´s Aunt Pansy was my mother) I enjoyed reconnecting through the later years with cousin Marge. She provided invaluable genealogical records of our family history. And her stories on FB were legendary. What a wonderful Christian woman of faith and love. Condolences and prayers for family left behind.

Have known Mrs. Ashley for years as we attended the same church. However when she became house bound due to illness, was when I enjoyed the precious time I spent with her the most as it was time we could sit, talk and laugh as she told her stories. I felt very close to her and so thankful for the time we had. She is resting peacefully.

Mrs. Ashley was a wonderful wife, mother and first class lady. She loved learning, sharing, and being with others, which was evident any time you talked with her. She will be greatly missed. I look forward to seeing her and Mr. Ashley again in the future.

I so enjoyed her humor & her love of words. She always spoke of how proud she was of her boys & family. She was so joyfilled & such a blessing. I washed my phone in the washing machine & just got a new one. I was so anticipating what she would´ve said about that but I´ll ask her when I get to see her in heaven! Y´all were BLESSED! Praying for you all. She loved BIG!

I feel very privileged to have met Marge Ashley in this world and am so happy to say that we were friends. I was drawn to her through her vast knowledge of history on Facebook stories on the Welcome to Gadsden sites and then we became personal friends and even exchanged some potted plants. I named mine Phil. Marge, I will continually take care of Phil in your sweet memory. Thank you for your stories. You made our lives richer.
