Steve Weems Obituary

Steve Weems, 64, Glencoe, passed away Monday, April 7, 2008, at his home from complications stemming from cancer.

Mr. Weems was born Oct. 14, 1943, in Spartanburg, S.C., the son of the late O.D. and Bernie Weems. Mr. Weems attended Glencoe High School before serving in the U.S. Navy.

He was longtime member of North Glencoe Baptist Church, an ordained deacon and an electrician by trade. He was a loving husband, a selfless father, a devoted grandfather and a steadfast friend whose dry wit, sense of humor and practical wisdom will be deeply missed. He loved the simple things in life: taking beach trips with family and friends, camping with his children, watching his grandchildren play sports and traveling to the Smokies - especially when the dogwoods were in bloom.

He cherished the outdoors whether on his tractor, planting a small garden, floating in his pool, driving through the mountains or passing the time loafing with his friends.

He was employed by Gulf States Steel and Goodyear for many years, but his tireless work ethic and know-how engaged him in various occupations he enjoyed, including building homes for his family.

His parents, O.D. and Bernie Weems; and his brother, John Weems, preceded Mr. Weems in death.

He is survived by Susie Weems, his wife for over 42 years; daughters, Terri (Buddy) Mitchell and Jennifer (Taylor) Powers; grandchildren, Jordan Alyssa Mitchell, Austin Taylor Mitchell, Sidney Elizabeth Powers and Lillian Weems Powers; niece, LeAnne Sexton; and nephew, John Weems.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. today in North Glencoe Baptist Church, Glencoe. The body will lie in state from 1 to 2 p.m., prior to the service.

Pallbearers are Jimmy Mayo, Bobby Washburn, David Bowers, Hackey Jaggers, Joe Cothran, Ken Lankford, Jimmy Luttrell, Justin Ward and Irby Womack.

We offer special thanks to the staff of Susie Weems Real Estate and friends from North Glencoe Baptist Church.
