Gaffney, SC – The Reverend Doctor Gary Jackson Bell, 75, of Gaffney, SC, went home to be with the Lord on September 22, 2021.
Reverend Bell was born on October 6th, 1945 in Beckley, WV, the son of Francis Everett Bell and Ara Buford Plato, and the stepson of Betty Sue Bell.
He grew up in Blue Ridge, GA, where he loved to spend time trout fishing with his father. Rev. Bell was a veteran of the United States Army where he spent time stationed in Germany as an avionics specialist for combat aircraft. He was married to Mary Ellen Etters Bell, with whom he had three children, for 52 years. Rev. Bell graduated from Florence Darlington Technical College with a degree in Electronics Engineering, earned Bachelor of Ministry and Master of Ministry degrees from Bethany Theological Seminary, and a Doctor of Ministry degree from Logos Theological Seminary. Rev. Bell was a minster for the Church of God, serving in multiple churches around SC and as District Overseer for the Gaffney and Lake City districts. He also served as the Chaplain for the Cherokee County Sheriff 's office for several years. Rev. Bell had a warm and inviting personality, a kind word for everyone, and a wisdom beyond his years. He was witty and charming, and always quick with a joke and a smile. Rev. Bell was a devoted and loving husband and father, a devout Christian, a mentor to many, and a friend to everyone.
Reverend Bell is survived by his wife, Mary Ellen Bell; his son Martin Bell (Julie); his daughter Diane Bell Humphries (LeRoy); his grandchildren, Leah Humphries Caywood, Tyler Humphries, and Kylie Bell; his siblings Sharon Bell McCoy (James), Pam Deadwyler, Kay Allen (Gary), Jodi Britt, Ricky Bell (Evelyn), Suzette Johnson, and Tina Moore (Lee); and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his older brother Larry Bell, and his youngest daughter Janet Marie Bell.
The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m. on Saturday, October 2, 2021 at North Spartanburg Church of God. Memorial services will follow at the Church at 2 p.m. with Reverend Larry Flippo officiating. Social distancing and masks are requested.
