Gaffney, S.C. - Gary Lamar Snead, 73, of 204 Lakeshore Drive, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, December 10, 2020 at Upstate Community Hospice Home in Landrum.
Born in Gaffney, he was the husband of Norma Jeanne Ledford Snead for 53 years and son of the late Rufus Forest Snead and Inez Ligon Snead. He was a graduate of Blacksburg High School and served as editor of the Centralian Newspaper. He received his BS degree from Limestone College and his Master's degree in Education from the University of South Carolina. He retired from the Cherokee County School District teaching mathematics at Ewing Middle School, Gaffney High School and the Cherokee Vocational School. He was a member of Central Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, Sunday school teacher and as vice-chairman of the Sanctuary construction committee. He was a life member of the National Rifle Association, a life member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, a member of the Palmetto Battalion (Civil War Re-enactor), conducted living history programs at school, and a member of CHAPS. He also was a collector of military artifacts and fountain pens. He was the recipient of the Ewing Teacher of the Year Award and the South Carolina (SCV) Division of Outstanding Chaplin Award. Gary was a wonderful husband and friend and loved his God, family and church. He was an avid reader of religious and historical literature. He will be missed so much.
Surviving in addition to his wife are a sister-in-law, Sylvia Phillips (Jerry); a niece, Melanie Cole (Brice); a nephew, George Flores (Christy); grand-nephews and grand-nieces, Elizabeth Flores, Nicholas Flores, Zachary Flores and Alyssa Cole; a special friend, Noah Bridges.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, December 14, 2020 at Central Baptist Church with Reverend Johnny Bridges and Reverend Steven Prinz officiating. Interment will be in Frederick Memorial Gardens. The family requests that social distancing be observed and that masks be worn.
