Boiling Springs, SC - James "Jim" Walker Alverson, 77, of 7 Merrimon Avenue, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, September 19, 2025 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.
Born in Spartanburg, he was the loving husband of Sherry Hawkins Alverson for 54 years and the son of the late DJ Alverson and Mildred Hines Alverson. He was a graduate of Spartanburg High School and University of South Carolina and was a United States Army Veteran. Jim was a lifelong leader who believed in bettering the world through education of its next generation. Jim served the State of SC and his community through 31 years as a teacher in the South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice and 52 years involvement with the Boy Scouts of America, where he was awarded the Palmetto Council highest leadership honor – the Silver Beaver Award and the Good Shepherd Award. He was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church Spartanburg and recently attended Beaumont Baptist Church. Jim was a member of the Son's of the American Revolution and the South Carolina Historical Association.
In addition to his wife, also surviving is a son, Jay Alverson (Brandi) of Charlotte; a brother, David R. Alverson (Kitty); two granddaughters, Brianna Alverson and Natalie Alverson; a brother-in-law, Jack Hawkins; a sister-in-law, Joy McGaha (Chuck); two nieces, Jennifer Alverson and Morgan Hawkins; two nephews, Jon Alverson and Ryan McGaha; several beloved grand-nieces and nephews; and many generations of cousins.
The family will receive friends from 11:30AM until 12:30PM on Tuesday, September 23, 2025 at Beaumont Baptist Church. Funeral services will immediately follow at 12:30PM at the church with Pastor John Lee, Mr. Jay Alverson and Mr. Danny Garrett officiating. Interment will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.
