Wayne Mathis Obituary
Gaffney, SC – Carl Wayne Mathis, 79, of 292 Goucher Green Bethel Road, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, January 10, 2025 at Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home.
Born in Gaffney, he was the husband of the late Andrea Grigg Mathis and son of the late Carl R. Mathis and Ara Cook Mathis. He was a graduate of Gaffney High School and Limestone College, retired from Arrow Automotive and the S. C. Vocational Rehabilitation Center, and a member of Goucher Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and Sunday School teacher. Wayne was a U. S. Air Force veteran, the president of Gideons International-Cherokee County, and a cattle farmer.
Surviving is a brother, Gary Mathis of Gaffney; a brother-in-law, Thomas Grigg (Jane) of Myrtle Beach; three sisters-in-law, Ann Mathis-Dixon, Darlene Babcock (Bill), both of Gaffney and Janice Ford of Summerville; seven nephews, Matthew Mathis, Michael Mathis, Marcus Mathis, Lucas Mathis, John Babcock, Joel Babcock and Russell Grigg; three nieces, Kristin Golden, Sydney Ford and Sarah Grigg; several great-nephews and great-nieces. In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Cecil Mathis.
The family will receive friends from 2:00 PM until 3:00 PM on Monday, January 13, 2025 at Goucher Baptist Church. Funeral services will follow at 3:00PM at the Church with Chaplain Roy Mathis, Reverend Robbie Stollger and Reverend Joel Babcock officiating. Interment, with military rites, will be in the Goucher Baptist Church Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: Goucher Baptist Church, "Youth Fund", 415 Goucher Creek Road, Gaffney, SC 29340 or Gideons International, P.O. Box 1712, Gaffney, SC 29342.
The family will be at the residence, 292 Goucher Green Bethel Road, Gaffney, SC 29340.
