Carlton´s legacy speaks to the rich cultural heritage of the North Georgia Mountains. Although I was only blessed to know Carlton in his final years on Earth, he was such a wealth of knowledge who could recollect most events and people with whom he had interacted in his life! He had such a detailed memory and played such a distinct role in the social and economic growth in the state. While we have lost a friend and mentor to many, in him, we have also lost a library and an invaluable resource of stories and memories. While he has passed, his memory will be enshrined into the region´s people for centuries to come.

Uncle Carlton was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and my dear dear uncle. As a small child I remember wonderful visits with Uncle Carlton and my mother's sister, Aunt Odetta. My cousins were my playmates and the whole Colwell family showed me love and stability in a time when my own family faced many many changes. We were blessed to have him in our lives and will miss him until we meet again. With love from Sharone and Juergen and Allie and Neil, in Harwich England.

From early on our families have been intertwined. This precious friendship began when Carlton and Mom went to school together. Then as time went on, when there was a Colwell boy born, there was also a Sullivan girl born. We all went to school together and became good friends. I will always have fond memories of the MANY rides to the skating rink in Suches, thanks to Carlton and Odetta. The connection continues with a neice, Karla, and Tom. Carlton wore many hats and wore them all with such greatness. He touched a lot of hearts that are now feeling a loss, mine is one of those. I want to express my deepest sympathy to all of his family.

Carlton helped so many people in this area. He helped Dewitt to get a job with the Department of Transportation and because of his intervention we were able to move back home to the mountains, to raise our children here where we were raised. He was never too busy to take a call from one of “ his people.” He treated us all like family. He was a treasure and will be missed. Our sincere condolences to the family on the loss of this wonderful man.

My deepest heartfelt condolences to your family for the loss of such a caring and wonderful man. When he worked at the Capitol, and we took our son, Mathhew King there, Carlton gave us the red carpet treatment, and had a Resolution made and typed up commending the bravery of Matthew for undergoing so many heart surgeries. The pictures of us with Carlton and speaker,Tom Murphy, and the Resolution still proudly hang on my wall.
May God bless you all during this sad time.
