Charles Edward “Gus” Whalen Jr. Obituary

Charles Edward "Gus" Whalen Jr., born April 9, 1945, in Chicago, Ill., passed away on June 21, 2015, at the age of 70. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Janelle Rollins Whalen; his children, Charles Edward Whalen III, and MaryAnn Whalen Campion; son-in-law Kevin Campion; his two grandsons, Mason Rossi Campion and Emery Whalen Campion; his mother, Doris Atteridge Whalen; his brothers, Jeff Whalen and Bill Whalen;, his sisters, Susan Wood, Molly Whalen and Kit Whalen Huggard; as well as many beloved nieces, nephews and cousins.

Gus spent his early years in Three Oaks, Mich., and Michigan City, Ind., and then moved to Gainesville, Ga., at age 12. He graduated from Gainesville High School, followed by LaGrange College, with dual majors in business and speech. After college, Gus joins the family business - The Warren Featherbone Company. At age 29, he succeeded his father and mother as president and enjoyed 38 years working in the apparel (baby clothes) industry. Thanks to the support and vision of civic-minded investors, Warren Featherbone was transformed in 2005 into the Featherbone Communiversity, which provides real-time collaborative learning in an intergenerational setting. Founding members are Lanier Technical College, Interactive Neighborhood for Kids (INK) and Brenau University. In 2010, The Southern Growth Policies Board named Featherbone Communiversity as the Innovator Award Winner from Georgia. In addition, The Warren Featherbone Foundation was established in 1917 and has in recent years introduced legislation in both houses of Congress to create Personal Philanthropy Accounts which will enable ordinary Americans to tell their family story through giving.

Gus's civic interests include First Baptist Church (Deacon), Kiwanis Club (Board member, President and Lt. Governor), Gainesville City Schools (Board of Education member for eight years), Leadership Georgia, North Georgia Health System (Board member 20 years, Executive Committee, Finance Committee, Governance Committee and Compensation Committee), Georgia State Workforce Investment Board (Business Representative 2007-2012), and the American Apparel Manufacturers Association (Chairman).

Gus received many special honors, including Ralph Cleveland Distinguished Citizens Award - Boy Scouts of America, Distinguished Service Award - Gainesville State College, LaGrange College Wall of Outstanding Alumni, Man of the Year 2011 - Gainesville, GA Rotary Club, Northeast Georgia Business Hall of Fame 2011 - Junior Achievement of Georgia, Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award 2011 - Brenau University, Honored Recipient, Inspiration Award - Manufacturers' Council of the Inland Empire, and 2014 - Inaugural President of The Association of Communiversities.

Gus was also a drummer in a band, a private pilot (with commercial and instrument ratings), and the author of four books: The Featherbone Principle, The Featherbone Spirit, The Gift of Renewal, and Hooked at the Roots. He was frequently invited to speak on adapting to change, business transformation and the evolution of Featherbone Communiversity.

A visitation will be held on Tuesday, June 23, from 6-8 p.m., with a memorial service on Wednesday, June 24, at 11 a.m., both at First Baptist Church of Gainesville. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Gus Whalen Hope Fund of the North George Community Foundation (www.ngcf.org/donate).

I was extremely fortunate to meet Gus on his visits to North Idaho. He was an inspiration to me personally and to our community as we worked to bring Bonner County Communiversity to life. He will be missed in more places than Georgia.

Gus was truly a remarkable person. I started to write "leader" -- but that word isn't broad enough to truly describe his many positive attributes. Besides his obvious contributions to our community, I always appreciated his smile and encouragement. He will be missed!

The Gainesville community has lost one of our greatest pillars in the passing of Gus Whalen. He was one of the kindest men I've ever met. Although the work he was doing was so important, he always made you feel like the work you were doing was vital. He was genuinely interested in everyone around him and seeing good things happen. He will be sorely missed.

Gus Whalen: A man who made a positive difference in the lives of so many of us! We were blessed to have been able to call him our friend. The most wonderful thing about this is that we are sure that everyone who knew him will feel exactly the same. We will long treasure the many specific blessings we received from knowing and associating with Gus and Nell. Their marriage was truly made in Heaven.
We extend our sincere condolences to Nell and to the Whalen family on his passing and thank each of you for sharing him with so many of us. We know that our life is better for having known Gus and certainly we will miss him. We pray a special blessing on each of you and that God will always enable you to reflect on the ways that he made each of you special in his life.
Love,
Becky and John Bradham

Gus was one of the most remarkable men I've ever met. I was fortunate to work with him on two of his books and it was an honor and a joy to get to know him. Wise, warm, and brilliant, he was a model for us all on how to live life. My husband, Billy, and I will miss him. Deepest condolences to the family from us both. Laurie Shock and Billy Howard

Gus was my first full-time boss (1969) and was a mentor before the word was even known! He was a special man who cared so much about developing people to their best self. He was a visionary and leader in the community and so much more. In spite of what life gave him, he lived life to the fullest and made the most of everything he touched. I'm not sure I ever told him how much he changed my life, but I know he was proud of my successes. He elevated me from a simple secretary/assistant to Sales Service Manager with Warren Featherbone when I was only 19 and showed me the potential I had. When I came back and talked with him many years later, I had become a Senior VP with Bank of America. Only because of his early faith in me did I see that I could advance that far. I'm sure he had the same impact on many others. The world has lost a great man!

Our deepest sympathies in the loss of this leader for the Gainesville Community. He was such a great host to the Greater Dalton Chamber of Commerce Executive Board in a visit Aug. 2014. I know he will be deeply missed.
