Lewis S. Goldberg
Ever the list maker, and in typical Lew fashion, regarding his passing Lew would like everyone to know that "this was not on my list." Lewis Stanley Goldberg (December 5, 1946—October 4, 2022) was a charismatic and loyal friend; devoted dad and spouse; and music aficionado with a penchant for early rising, good chocolate, running errands, beautiful cars, walking, cycling, volunteering, gardening, and cooking. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Francine Goldberg (née Korfin); daughter, Lilly Goldberg; son-in-law, Asher Berman; grandson, Noah Berman; and lots of family and friends.
Always ready with a joke, non sequitur, or song lyric to match the mood of the moment, Lew cared. He was invested. He was attentive and a safe place for many. He was excited to lend a helping hand and celebrate the milestones and achievements of the people in his life.
A proud native Washingtonian, Lew grew up in Northeast DC and Takoma Park. For a period, he worked at Discount Book and Record Shop under family friend Bob Bialek and frequently recounted witnessing Hendrix's DC debut in August 1967 at the long-defunct Ambassador Theater at 18th Street and Columbia Road NW in Adams Morgan, saying, "he literally melted our faces off." Lew graduated from the University of Maryland (1969) with a degree in Psychology. He served as a non-commissioned officer in the United States Marine Corp during the Vietnam era and went on to earn his master's and PhD from American University in Psychology (1973) and Clinical Psychology (1976), respectively.
Lew met Fran on a blind date on Easter Sunday 1976 in Orange, New Jersey. The two moved to Marion, Indiana; Morgantown, West Virginia; and Middletown, Connecticut where Lew later became Chief Psychologist at Riverview Children's Hospital; before settling in Haddam, Connecticut and later Lewes, Delaware. Lew served as president of Adath Israel Synagogue and on the Chevra Kadisha. He volunteered at the Bike Barn with the Friends of Cape Henlopen State Park and could be seen taking an early morning ride on the Georgetown-Lewes trail to Old World Breads Bakery for a cup of coffee and pastry or chocolate chip cookie.
This wasn't on our list either, Lew. We can't say that we'll iron the linen napkins, handwash all the dishes after Thanksgiving, scrub the shower grout, or keep our cars meticulously spotless, but we'll wish you were still here to do those things for us.
A funeral service is scheduled for 1:00pm on Sunday, October 9 at Congregation Adath Israel Synagogue, 8 Broad Street, Middletown, CT. Masks requested. Burial will follow in Adath Israel Cemetery in Middletown. Lew wasn't a suit person, so casual attire is preferred. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to Adath Israel Chevra Kadisha or the Lewes Fire Department @ Congregation Adath Israel Synagogue, Chevra Kadisha, PO Box 337, Middletown, CT 06457 or
