Richard Robert Pendergrass, 71, of Seabrook Island, South Carolina, passed away on November 2. Born on December 24, 1953, in Athens, Georgia, Richard was the beloved son of the late Joseph Conway Pendergrass, Sr., and Virginia Bishop Pendergrass.
A graduate of Gainesville High School in 1972, Richard excelled both academically and athletically, serving as Co-Captain of the football team and earning Class AA Georgia All-State honors in 1971. He went on to attend the Georgia Institute of Technology, where he earned both a Bachelor of Civil Engineering and a Master of Sanitary Engineering and was a member of the Sigma Nu fraternity.
Richard was the Owner and President of Pendergrass & Associates, Inc., leading the company from 1990 until his retirement in 2021. He was a car enthusiast and a proud recipient of the 2013 Georgia Tech Auto Show Design Award for his 1957 Cobra Reproduction. He was committed to service and history, serving several years as President of the Oconee County Historical Society and supporting numerous causes, including the Kimberley Chance Atkins Foundation Tennis Tournament, the Oconee County Veterans Memorial Park, and the Reverend John Andrew Chapter, NSDAR. He was also a member of the Conyers Rotary Club.
Richard is survived by his loving wife, Ruth Reed Pendergrass; daughter, Kathryn Elizabeth Eveleth (Jonathan); son, Richard Reed Pendergrass; and two grandchildren, Charles David Eveleth and Anne Elizabeth Eveleth. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, Joseph Conway Pendergrass, Jr., Stephen Michael Pendergrass, and Allen Douglas Pendergrass.
Richard will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, dog lover, and loyal friend.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Association for Frontotemporal Degeneration.
