Graciela Barnett
1928 - 2021
Graciela (Grace) Barnett passed away peacefully at her home in Gardena with her family by her side. Grace (nee Olea) was born in Los Angeles the day after Christmas and would never let you forget that her birthday deserved separate recognition. On May 25, 1950, she married Gustavo (Gus) Barnett and in 1951 established their home in Gardena. Following his death in 2007, Grace continued to live independently in her own home as she had always wished. She was an active member of St Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, where she attended 7:30AM mass every Sunday. Like clockwork, she would arrive 30 minutes early to secure her favorite parking space near the church entrance and her seat near the altar. Woe to anyone who beat her to either.
She was a member of many social groups within the South Bay Area including the Gardena Senior Center where she helped with and attended lunch and dinner functions, the Friends of Mayme Dear Library, the South Bay Quilters Guild and the Traveling Quilters. She was also a member of the St Anthony parish senior group and enjoyed their weekly meetings and many outings. Grace made many close friendships through these groups and her family believes that her involvement and the friendships made, were what kept her young and independent. Her participation in these groups and her love of fast food (Pollo Loco & McDonald's) kept her driving at age 92.
Throughout her life, she was a consummate craft person, painting, crocheting, stitching, glueing and knitting. Her passion, however was in quilting and in collecting quilts, where her "Fort Knox" of fabrics, supplies, patterns and collectibles was kept under lock and key. Very few people were allowed into her craft room, with only her knowing where the key was kept. This love stayed with her up until her last days where she could still be found stitching miniature "yo-yo's" or doing piece work.
Grace was preceded in death by her husband Gus, daughter Olga Elsa And grandson Andrew. She is survived by her son Robert, daughter-in-law Sue, grandsons Kellen and Robert, nephew Esteban Skutsch and niece Ana María Skutsch, her goddaughter Michelle and many other close relatives that always made a point to check in on her. Her family is also very grateful and indebted to her neighbor ("daughter") Monica Gutierrez and her family and her close friends Susan and Kenny Helm for always being there. Their love and attention enabled Grace to maintain her independence and remain in her home until her passing.
A funeral mass will be celebrated on Friday, June 18 at 11AM at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Gardena. Her favorite priest, Father George Aguilera, will celebrate the mass. Burial will be at Green Hills Cemetery alongside her loved husband, Gus and their daughter, Olga.
