Michael Lewis Thomas
He was born Michael Lewis Thomas the only son and the youngest of two children on July 21st, 1930, in Chicago Heights Illinois. His parents were Willie Bee Henry and Michael Thomas. After graduating from Bloom Township Senior High School. He enlisted in the United States Air Force in August of 1951. He was honorably discharged with a rank of Sargent in 1955.
Following the days of formal service he changed his name from Michael to Mike, enrolled in Los Angeles trade Technical College taking courses for an associate's degree in electronics field in 1975. In 1982 he completed another degree in carpentry.
He was concurrently employed with the city of Los Angeles in various positions related to electronics. While working at the Los Angeles City Hall Mike observed that workers had a great difficulty maneuvering large pipes throughout the building. This inspired him to invent a device to facilitate the process. Mike was awarded a certificate for his invention by Mayor Tom Bradley and given at promotion at that time. In 1989 Mike retired early having worked for 32 years for the Los Angeles city.
Mike married Georgia Johnson the mother of his children Cecille, Michael Carey and Kenneth. Michael Lewis Cole was Mike's first son. He also had twin sons. Following the dissolution of his first marriage he briefly married Nancy who died two years later in 1978.
Mike met the love of his life Beverly Nickerson they married on September 27th, 1987, Beverly had a daughter Sharai now deceased from a previous marriage.
Mike was a faithful and active member at Figueroa Church of Christ in Los Angeles for nearly 5 decades. If you knew him at all you knew that next to Bible study and other church activities, Mike loved singing Karaoke and bowling. He won championship awards for bowling excellence in California. He also taught / mentored the sport to adults and children late into his 80s, he loved to travel abroad--when he did so he would always sing ballads of Frank Sinatra made A CD of two Frank Sinatra's songs "That's Life" and "My Way" in a recording studio. People enjoyed his singing complimented him and often asked for encores.
Mike leaves behind his loving wife Beverly. Daughter Cecille, sons Michael Carey and Kenneth. Grandchildren; Jeffrey, Karla, Joshua, Nautica, Tisha, Kia, and Carey Trevon. Great-grandchildren: Brian, Jekara, Mayalani, Kainami, Nalena and Nelani, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, godchildren, sisters in law, son in law and adopted family members plus a world of friends who always love, esteem and miss him deeply.
