Georgia Calvert Obituary

LOWELL - Georgia Mae Funderburke Calvert, 81, died June 28, 2011, at her home, surrounded by her family.

She was born March 6, 1930, in Belmont, daughter of the late George and Bessie McGee Funderburke.

Georgia was primarily a mother and homemaker but also worked at Firestone for eight years and retired from Quickway Cleaners. More importantly she was a loyal, dedicated, and faithful pastor's wife who loved to sing and be involved in the music of her church. Currently, she was a member of Goshen Freewill Baptist Church in Mount Holly, but was a longtime, former member of First Freewill Baptist Church in Gastonia. Georgia will be re-membered for her sweet disposition and wonderful smile. She was fiercely devoted to her children, was a great cook, and was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother.

Her family would like to extend their gratitude to the staff of Gaston Hospice, and in particular, Lisa Parler, for their loving and compassionate care of Georgia.

Survivors of Mrs. Calvert include her husband of 61 years, Rev. William H. Calvert of Lowell; son and daughter-in-law, William "Danny" and Renee Calvert; daughter and son-in-law, Leesa and Dennis McCraw; all of Gastonia; grandchildren, Dawn McCraw, Jonathan Calvert, Tami Calvert Austin, Shannon Calvert Pearson, Dustin Hart, Wade Calvert, and Corryn Calvert; six great-grandchildren; sister, Margie Simonds of Gastonia; numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Jerry Wayne Calvert.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at McLean Funeral Directors of Gastonia.

A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Friday at First Freewill Baptist Church of Gastonia, with the Rev. John Gibbs and Dr. Danny Dwyer officiating.

Interment will follow the service at Gaston Memorial Park.

Memorials may be made to Gaston Hospice, PO Box 3984, Gastonia, NC 28054.

Preacher Calvert, Danny, Leesa, my thoughts and prayers are with you and all of your family. Pastor, your wife was such a gracious, loving lady, and the memories that I have as a child being part of the church while we were all at the corner of 5th and Willow Streets are fond, warm memories that I hold dear to my heart. Danny, Leesa, you are honorable and devoted children, just as Jerry was, and and I know how proud you all are to have been blessed with such a great father and mother. Leesa, the love your mother showed to all she came in touch with shows in how you were raised and how you treat people as well. I truly admire you, as I did your mother. Danny, you are a friend that I always enjoy seeing whenever the chance comes. I always enjoyed sitting with you and having coffee in Sunday school. Pastor, with all the troubles and heartaches this world throws at us, your early teachings of our Lord are rooted in me and countless others, and although we may not always adhere to His word, the teachings are still there. I still remember word for word many poignant points that you made years ago as our Pastor. I will always appreciate the wise council and true love that you have for us all. And anyone who knows you and your family then knows what a devoted and loving wife God has blessed you with having for 61 years. Mrs Calvert was a wonderful lady and will surely be missed by many. May our Lord bless you all. Chris Stokes

To all of the Calvert family, Curtis and myself express our deep sorrow at your loss. Georgia was a wonderful woman and a joy to be around. It's hard when we lose our parents, but if they know the Lord, we will most definitely see them again. May God be with you and hold you. Love, Curtis and Cheryl Martin
