We knew Al from Florence Community Band, and Senior Band in Holyoke. Always friendly, inviting, & a great musician.
Our condolences, Heather and family. Thanks for including the lovely photo of him.

I am so sorry to hear of Al´s passing. He was such a special person and musician, and I´m deeply grateful our paths crossed through Mandolin New England and the many community bands he shared his talents with.
I´ll always remember those rehearsals and performances in Greenfield and Northampton, how his mandolin wasn´t just an instrument but part of a conversation he was having with everyone around him. He listened-truly listened-not just to the music but to the people in the room, and that kind of presence is rare.
His life beyond music - his architectural work, his writing, his photography of Northampton and rail-history articles - showed how wide his interests were and how deeply he cared about the craft of paying attention. It always struck me that whether he was filming a trolley, playing a fiddle, or writing for Orion Magazine, he brought the same quiet dedication and curiosity.
To Heather, Jeanne, David, Grace, Stephen, Susannah, and all who loved him: you have my heartfelt condolences. Know that the music he made, the kindness he offered, and the quiet strength he embodied live on in all of us who had the privilege to know him.
Thank you, Al, for the music, for the photographs, for the conversations, and for being the kind of musician and person who reminds us what community really means. You will be missed dearly, and your influence continues.
