Angela Shartrand Obituary

FLORENCE - Angela Marie Shartrand, of Florence, died in her home June 26, 2017, at the age of 48. Born in North Adams on April 16, 1969, to Edward and Nancy (Galli) Shartrand, Angela attended public schools in North Adams prior to graduating from Williams College. She received a master's degree in education from Harvard University and a doctorate in applied developmental and educational psychology from Boston College. Angela married Scott Andrew in Williamstown on July 19, 1997, and they have resided in Florence since August of 2002. Angela and Scott were blessed with two children, Noah, 17, and Naomi, 14, Andrew.

Angela began her professional career as a research coordinator at the Harvard Family Research Project in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and until her cancer diagnosis in 2015 was the director of research and evaluation at VentureWell Inc. in Hadley.
During her career, Angela authored and co-authored white papers and academic articles on topics ranging from family support programs to engineering and entrepreneurial programs in higher education.

After being diagnosed with de novo metastatic, triple-negative breast cancer in her liver in September of 2015, Angela became an avid cancer researcher and activist. Among other organizations, Angela became involved with the Broad Institute, which focuses on genomic research to cure disease, and MET UP, a metastatic breast cancer activist organization. Angela communicated with cancer patients, researchers and activists around the country and participated in conferences, die-ins and lobbying from Washington, D.C. to San Antonio, Texas.

Even more important to Angela than her research and activism was her family. Always one to enjoy simple pleasures in life, Angela loved rallying Scott, Noah and Naomi to bake Easter bread, play family games, and help her with newly selected recipes. She bravely insisted the family take their first vacations outside the continental United States while she was receiving chemotherapy.

Angela will be remembered as an intelligent, calm and humble person who had a quiet wisdom, warm heart and authentic way about her that drew people to her and made her a wonderful wife and mother, trusted friend and respected colleague.

Angela was predeceased by her father, Edward Shartrand, and uncles Joseph Shartrand and John Shartrand. She is survived by her husband, Scott Andrew, son Noah Andrew, and daughter Naomi Andrew; mother Nancy Shartrand; great uncle William Pasotti; uncles Alfred Galli, William ""Billy"" Galli, and Paul Shartrand and his wife, Sandy; aunts Carol ""Rose"" (Galli) Massaconi and her husband, Mitchell, and Christine (Spencer) Shartrand; and four cousins. Angela also leaves her father-in-law Dennis Andrew and his wife, Linda; mother-in-law Maureen Ryan and her husband, Paul; brothers-in-law Todd Andrew and Matthew Andrew; and nephew Tucker Andrew and niece MacKenzie Andrew.

A memorial service to celebrate Angela's life will be held at the Log Cabin at 500 Easthampton Road in Holyoke on Tuesday, July 11, from 3 to 5 p.m. Service to be followed by a reception.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to MET UP, PO Box 4251, San Leandro, CA 94579.

Nancy,
I am so sorry. Angela was one of the greatest kids I ever had during my teaching career.

Holly Cookis Michaelson

June 29, 2017

Scott and the kids, I am so sorry to hear about Angela. I had really hoped things would go differently for your family. Having lost my sister, Hope Cookis-McCarthy, at age 49 to colon cancer and being a breast cancer survivor myself, I empathetically feel your loss. I have been thinking of Angela constantly since I learned she entered Hospice. My heart is with you. Hope and Angela were bandmates at Drury and classmates at Williams. So many similarities between their situations. There are no words that help. Only time lessens the grief. I know Angela would want the focus to be on her kids and we wish them all the best. If we can be of service, please do not hesitate to call on us. We may have some measure of experience that can be of benefit to you. We're muddling through life without Hope on a daily basis. Please take comfort in Angela's many life achievements and the people she influenced and touched on her cancer journey. She will be deeply missed.

Scott, Noah, Naomi, and Nancy,

The day we have all been dreading came and I don't really know what to say. My heart aches as I know the last thing Angela ever wanted to do was to leave you. Her body may not be here but, her spirit, spunk, and shine will never leave this world it's in all that she did, every life she touched, and with you forever. She was the most talented and intelligent young girls I have ever known, dedicated to anything she set her mind to doing. Her beauty wasn't only in her physical appearance but, straight from a very loving heart and I am very grateful to have known her. May all the wonderful memories you have help you. You are all in my thoughts and prayers.

June 28, 2017

Dear Nancy,

I hope the beautiful memories you have of your dear, sweet daughter will lessen your pain with each passing day.
Prayers are with you all.

Love,

Carol
