Bruce Miller Obituary

Bruce K. Miller

Northampton, MA - Bruce Kenneth Miller passed away from cancer on July 21, 2024 in Wynnewood, Pennsylvania.

Bruce was born in Evanston, Illinois on March 7, 1945 to Kenneth Benjamin Miller and Jean Elaine Miller (née Atkins). In 1951, Bruce's family relocated to Southern California where Bruce and his beloved younger sister, Shelley, were raised. In his childhood and youth, Bruce was described as forever curious and having a unique sense of humor – one that was warm and astute, but with a hint of playful mischievousness. Just as in his adulthood, young Bruce's primary interests were sports, history, and politics. His photographic mind had a knack for remembering obscure sports statistics, mostly pertaining to the San Francisco Giants, the Los Angeles Lakers, and (later) the Boston Red Sox. He spent many days of his childhood in the San Fernando Valley playing stick ball and baseball with the neighborhood kids. A graduate of Northridge High School, Bruce was always proud of and grateful for his excellent public school education.

Bruce went on to attend Stanford University, where he truly found a place for himself. He organized and played on many intramural sports teams, and was a proud member of the Delta Chi fraternity. In his junior year, Bruce studied abroad in Germany. His "Stanford in Germany Gruppe" became life-long friends, maintaining their connection through many spirited reunions over the years. Stanford, and the friends he made there, remained dear to him well into his adult life.

From Stanford, Bruce attended Harvard Law School in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where he earned his Juris Doctorate. Following a brief stint at the Federal Department of Health, Education, and Welfare in Washington, D.C., Bruce returned to the Los Angeles area, where he worked as a staff attorney for the National Senior Citizens Law Center (NSCLC).

It was at NSCLC where Bruce met Jane, his then-secretary and to-be wife. The strength of Bruce and Jane's love was undeniable, taking them on adventures along the California Coast and into the National Parks of the West, all to the soundtrack of Gram Parsons, Willie Nelson, and Waylon Jennings. Their almost 50-year love story was the foundation of Bruce's life.

In 1980, Bruce began a more than 40-year career as faculty at Western New England University School of Law in Springfield, Massachusetts. There, Bruce taught Constitutional Law, Federal Courts, Jurisprudence, and Civil Procedure courses, to name a few. The depth and breadth of Bruce's influence as a law teacher cannot be understated. Bruce did not just teach students about the law, he reassured them that they belonged in law school, even if they were first in their family to achieve higher education, or they did not dream of a career in "Big Law," or their voice had perhaps been unheard or overlooked in the past. Bruce's students praised him for his acceptance of differing viewpoints. His unwavering commitment to social justice made him a beacon to many.

Bruce lived in service to the overlooked and underprivileged; he rejected prejudicial confines, instead seeing in all people their inherent worth. A strong believer in public service, Bruce proudly served on the Board of Directors of the Rosenberg Fund for Children (RFC) for many years. The mission of the RFC, which is to provide aid to children whose parents have been targeted due to their progressive activities, was deeply important to Bruce. Bruce also served as President of the Board of No More Guantanamos/Guantanamo Survivors Fund, an organization focused on closing the US Guantanamo Bay Detention Camp and ending state-sanctioned torture. Finally, Bruce was a member of the Committee for Public Counsel Services and an active Board member of the Hampden County Lawyers for Justice (HCLJ), both of which seek to ensure that indigent clients are provided with legal representation in all areas of law.

While cultivating generations of future lawyers, Bruce was simultaneously raising two daughters of his own alongside Jane. Their first-born, Emilie, followed in Bruce's footsteps by becoming a teacher (of Clinical Pilates). Their second-born, Lauren, followed in Bruce's footsteps by becoming a lawyer. As a father, Bruce was tender and loving, bringing his unique sense of humor to fatherhood. He was present for all the big moments of his girls' lives, along with the smaller ones that he never let go unnoticed.

The joy of Bruce's life in later years was his four grandsons. He loved shooting hoops with them, talking and watching sports, playing card games, and giving them wild tickles. It is through his grandsons that Bruce's legacy will live on in future generations.

Bruce is survived by his wife Jane Miller, his sister Shelley Smith and nephew Cameron Smith, his daughter Emilie Miller (Stephen), his daughter Lauren Hoye (Adam), and his grandsons, Whitman Adam Hoye, Benjamin Thomas Hoye, Daniel Bruce Hoye, and Everett James Hoye.

Bruce was my roommate at Delta Chi at Stanford. His cheerful wit and positive attitude were a delight. He would lapse into LA slang at a moment's notice and his shaggy dog stories, which could last for 20 minutes or more, were masterpieces of extemporaneous wit. I counted his as a lifelong friend and deeply mourn his passing.

I arrived after Prof. Miller resigned from WNE Law and met him in person once. His intelligence and commitment to the rule of law and WNE Law were always evident and will long remain with us-my deepest sympathies to his family.

"Bruce lived in service to the overlooked and underprivileged; he rejected prejudicial confines, instead seeing in all people their inherent worth."

Prof. Miller was one of the few who could do this and he did it effortlessly and with love.

So many wonderful comments and memories about Bruce. I certainly wish I had had him for Constitutional Law - a generally tough subject! My memories of him are from our time with Stanford in Germany. As my daughters would say, "Bruce brought the party." I can still see that gleam in his eye that said he was thinking of "what next?"
Auf Wiedersehen, Bruce. You made a big difference to so many people.

When I think of Bruce Miller, I think of the many law students whose lives he touched, and the countless additional lives those future lawyers went on to transform through their advocacy. Although I never had "Professor" Miller during my time as a law student at WNE Law, I did have the privilege to work with him during my time on the administration. His commitment to generating and supporting pathways to lawyering in the public interest was genuine and resolute. My condolences to his family, his colleagues, and the many people who held him in such high esteem.

Great men like Professor Miller change the world because they have great families who love and support them. Please know that you are held in the hearts of many during this time. I am a legal aid attorney because of educators like Bruce. He taught me that as long as you do the work and never take yourself too seriously, you can, indeed, make a difference. He will forever be an icon. God Bless You and Keep You. Thank you for sharing Professor Miller with the world.

I had the good fortune to work with Bruce for 7 years when I was in the Office of Admissions at WNE. He was always so generous with his time at open house and other events. He took an interest in our students before they even matriculated and that mentorship continued throughout their law school careers.

I also treasured his occasional visits to Admissions so we could discuss the MLB trade deadline or how the Giants or Red Sox were playing that season.

He was a great man and will be sorely missed but remembered fondly. Condolences to all who loved him.

I was going to click on "school," but he was more than my professor. He was my friend, my sparring partner, my mentor, my coach, my editor ... what wasn't he, and to so many individuals?

People were often surprised that we could talk for hours, because they perceived differences, when we were actually very much alike in philosophy. We just came at it from different ways, which made it all the more fun!

My favorite quote? When practicing for the National Team, he stopped me, looked me in the eye, and said, "It's about time you got that argument right." And we laughed and laughed and laughed!

God speed my friend!

Jane, Emilie, and Lauren:

Generations of lawyers are better for having known Bruce Miller. I am lucky to count myself among those lawyers. You captured it best--Bruce lived in service. Every day. Without exception. Even more, Professor Miller always saw the best in others. He had such a rare gift for meeting people where they were, helping others see a different perspective, and for above all else, showing kindness. He was such an incredible combination of brilliance and humility. How lucky we were to know and learn from him!

My best thoughts, as well as the best thoughts of hundreds of law students and lawyers, are with you now and in the times to come. I am so very sad to know of Professor Miller's passing. It is to us to carry on his legacy of service and goodness.

Peace,
Kelley Cooper Miller

If you were assigned to Bruce Miller's Constitutional Law class in your first year of law school, you hit the jackpot. It's hard to imagine a better person to introduce a complex, obscure subject to new students. He had complete command of his craft, and most importantly, an endless well of patience as some of us struggled with this new way of thinking. He was a true gentleman.

I took two classes from Professor Miller in law school-Constitutional Law and ERISA. He had a major impact on my life, and his views impacted my choice in becoming a bar advocate. He made a major contribution into all students who had the pleasure of being in a class with him, and he left this Earth far too early! He truly was an exceptional person!

My heart breaks to hear that my beloved Consitutional Law professor has passed away. Professor Miller ("call me Bruce") was so very kind and encouraging to this nontraditional student. He loved teaching and made the Constitution come alive. As great as he was as a teacher, I am sure he was even more magnificant as a spouse and father. He will live on in memory for many of us. My sincere condolences to Bruce's family.
