Carl Schmittlein Obituary

NORTHAMPTON - Carl George Schmittlein, 86, of Northampton, son of Joseph Schmittlein and Beatrice (Goller) Schmittlein departed this earthly world on April 7, 2017, to reunite with his wife Theresa, who predeceased him July 9 of last year.

Carl was born in Northampton on April 2, 1931, and attended the former Saint Michael's Schools, graduating with the class of 1949. He continued his studies and later graduated from the former Northampton Commercial College. Carl entered military service in 1952, serving in the U.S. Marine Corps. And in 1953 he married the former Theresa Rita DuBois, with whom he shared his life for 64 years until the time of her death.

Carl had a very satisfying 30-year career at the Daily Hampshire Gazette newspaper, from which he retired in 1993. Upon his retirement, Carl and his wife Theresa moved to the sunshine of Naples, Fla., where they spent 15 happy years together before returning to Northampton to be with their family. In his later years Carl brought much pleasure to himself and those around him through his painting. To his delight, some of his works were included in a show at his residence, Christopher Heights in Northampton.

Carl is survived by his son, David Schmittlein and his wife Barbara Bickart of Newton; his son Joseph Schmittlein of Kingston, N.H.; his son Jeffrey Schmittlein and his wife Jennifer (Freund) of Easthampton; his daughter Carol Schmittlein of South Hadley; his son Mark Schmittlein and his wife Lynne (Reed) of Northampton; and his son Roger Schmittlein of Easthampton; grandsons Michael Schmittlein, Gabriel Schmittlein, and granddaughters Kailee Littrell, Danielle Schmittlein, Paige Schmittlein, Katherine Schmittlein and Brigitte Schmittlein; and three great-grandchildren. Carl is also survived by his sister-in-law, Lucille Pontbriand, of Northampton. Carl was predeceased by his sister, Doris Bliznak, of Northampton.

Funeral services will be held at Ahearn Funeral Home in Northampton, with calling hours on Wednesday, April 12, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., followed by a service at Ahearn's and burial at Saint Mary's Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation in Carl's name to The Hospice of the Fisher Home, 1165 North Pleasant Street, Amherst, MA 01002.
