Carolyn Hemenway Obituary

Carolyn Hemenway July 1, 1941 - March 7, 2023

Northampton, MA - Carolyn Evelyn Goldner Hemenway, 81, of Northampton, Massachusetts, died peacefully at home on March 7, 2023. Born July 1, 1941, to Edna and Edward Goldner, Carrie grew up in the Bronx, in New York City, surrounded by a group of sibling-like cousins and a tightknit extended family. She moved to New Haven, Conn. where her father started an ophthalmology practice in the 1950s. There, Carrie -- ever outgoing and social -- met more lifelong friends and attended New Haven High School.

She attended the University of Connecticut in Storrs in the early 1960s, then, years later – as a single mother with three children – had the chutzpah and stamina to earn a Master of Education degree in Human Services Counseling and Administration at Antioch Graduate Center (now Cambridge College). In her recent years, Carrie was a Life Coach, after having worked at Smith College for 20 years as the communications director at Smith's Career Development Office and filling a similar role at Hampshire College.

A prolific and talented writer, Carrie has documented her life growing up in the Bronx in a series of personal stories filling drawers full of her notebooks. She was also an activist in Northampton during the 1970s and 1980s, focused on unionizing childcare workers, LGBTQ+ rights, women's rights, civil rights, and anti-nukes, and many other issues. She was first and foremost a fierce feminist and joined the legions of women of her time fighting to gain and maintain a woman's right to reproductive autonomy. In the 1980s – way ahead of her time -- her activism centered on the size acceptance movement, and she became a regular contributor to Radiance, a magazine for large women, as well as a spokesperson for fat acceptance around the U.S.

Known for her warmth, big smile, and generous spirit, Carrie's superpower was making people feel loved and accepted. She was an avid reader of the Daily Hampshire Gazette, and, in her final years, its arrival at her doorstep each morning became a highlight of her day. Known by her grandchildren as "Baba," she will be sorely missed as a person who fiercely loved her family and her cadre of neighbors and friends – including her mail carrier -- who always looked out for her.

Carrie is pre-deceased by her parents, Edna and Edward Goldner. Survivors include her three children, Thor Hemenway, Cassandra Hemenway and husband Charles Stevens, and Eliza Hemenway; her grandchildren Katherine Coviello and Emery, Alex and Aurora Brush; her sister Patricia Sue (Goldner) Iovieno, her nephews Bryan and Derek Iovieno, and many beloved cousins, nieces and nephews.

A small, burial service held at the Hebrew Cemetery Society on Sunday, March 12, and a larger Celebration of Life will be held later this year, with details announced in this newspaper.

As Carrie would say at the end of every family visit, "Bye for now."

I last spoke to Carrie a couple of months ago, when we remarked on the fact that we were both born in July, 1941, and both were still alive and kickin´! We have a long history in size acceptance, first in the NAAFA organization, and later when she and I were among seven co-founding directors, in 1991, of the CSWD (Council on Size & Weight Discrimination), of which she still served as a director.
Carrie was one of the nicest people I have ever known in the size acceptance movement! I am deeply saddened by her passing!

I first met Carrie somewhere in the 1980s when she was around Boston where I lived. I knew her through fat liberation work and appreciated her strength of spirit and kindness She said "Feel the fear and do it anyway." That has been a wonderful mantra for me throughout my life. I'm sorry for your loss. I hope your memories of her bring big smiles and some belly laughs .

Pat. Just found out about the loss of your sister Carrie. My sincere condolences. I´ll always remember her. A great neighbor and friend. I´ll never forget when she wrote in chalk on the brick wall in the front of our house. It´s still there. She always had a smile. So sorry. Richard Naples

Carrie brought me into fat feminist activist conferences she organized in the nineties in ways that opened powerful paths for my life and my writing. She successfully worked for years to get NOW to include size in their anti discrimination policies. She was joyful, fun, and generous in her organizing. She was also a brave and committed friend. I send my deepest sympathies to her family and all those close to her who are mourning this loss.

Carrie was a bright light for me in my earliest days at Smith, 1980s and 90s, the height of the lycra-exercise-until-you-drop and starve yourself in the meantime days. She came to many of my health classes to help me educate students on the immense damage done by dieting and weight loss programs, and rigid body shape standards. A true counter-culture revolutionary, she educated with compassion and grace. Her good will was motivational and infectious, and the waves of her abundant life energy will continue to flow outward for years to come.

Thor, Cass, and Eliza, and beloved grandchildren I thought of Carrie several times this past week. Now I´m thinking she was visiting with me as she made her journey back home. Loved her dearly and will always remember her fondly. May her memory be for a blessing. this obituary was perfect and described her person and her life beautifully.

One of my fondest memories of Carrie is when we dressed up in fancy hats and dress gloves and slinky dresses and paraded around downtown Northampton as Ladies Against Women, doing feminist street theater and handing out citizen's arrest warrants. This was in the Phyllis Shlafley era, when we actually thought we would pass the Equal Rights Amendment. Carrie came up with the best ways to stand up to every injustice, with humor, love, commitment, creativity, and community.

Cassandra, Eliza, and Thor, may all of your families find comfort in the knowledge that her spirit is doling out compassion along with citizen's arrest warrants to anyone who is not standing on the side of love.

My love and compassion to all of you.

I always enjoyed running into Carrie whose smile lit everything up around her. We met many years ago through our work together at The Valley Women's Center and the Valley Women's union where her opinions and remarks were so valuable.
I am so very sorry for your loss. May her name be a blessing. May she rest in peace.

Carrie was a dear friend and comrade in the 70´s and 80´s in the struggle for women´s rights, unionizing HCAC, organizing in low-income neighborhoods and much more. I will miss her smile and deep concern. My heart goes out to Thor, Cassandra and Eliza. May her memory be a blessing.
