Doris Metzger Obituary

AMHERST - Doris Metzger, mother of Eva Metzger Brown, died Wednesday, July 8, 2015, at the Center for Extended Care on Amherst.

Doris was born May 9, 1916, in Nurnberg, Germany. She was the fourth child of Elizabeth and Alfred Bamburger. Her teenage years were marred by the rise of Nazism in Germany. She married Ernest Metzger Dec. 19, 1936, and her daughter Eva was born in July 1938. It was only after Kristalnacht in November 1938 that they got visas to leave Germany. They were in France when war broke out and Doris and Eva were injured in a bombing in Angers, France, that cost Doris her lower leg. Miraculously in the chaos of fallen France, the three were reunited and managed to flee from Marseille via Morocco and Martinique arriving in the U.S. in June 1941.

In the U.S., Doris and her husband Ernest rebuilt their lives and she attained leadership positions in Hadassah, the National Jewish Women's Organization in Queens, New York, and later in her community in Royal Palm Beach, Florida.

Doris was blessed with and is survived by her daughter Eva and her husband Norman; grandchildren David and his wife Deborah, Carolyn Mitchell and her husband Paul, and Michael and his wife Yaldira and seven great-grandchildren, Alejandro, Jacob, Sally, Ernesto, Sam, Camila and Max. They all remember her as a loving, generous, supportive, intelligent, optimistic mother, grandmother and great-grandmother - truly a woman of valor.
