James McMahon Obituary

James J. McMahon, III, 53, passed away on Thursday, November 12, 2020 at UMASS Memorial in Worcester. He was born in Northampton to the late Verna (Graham) and James J. McMahon, Jr. Jim was employed for many years at Cambridge Credit Counseling Corp in Agawam. He was an avid board gamer; enjoying many trips to "Gathering of Friends" in Niagara Falls and GenCon in Indianapolis where he met many friends from around the country. He enjoyed traveling: Disney World, the Corning Glass Museum, and Rockport, MA for "First Night" and "Santa Coming in on a Lobster Boat" being among his favorites. In his own words, he was a geek and a nerd and celebrated every "May the 4 th" gleefully. Jim went through the world with a child like enthusiasm and a love for fun and laughter. Jim is survived by his beloved wife, Celina A. (Brooks) McMahon, his brother Patrick McMahon and his wife Jean of Southampton, his sisters, Marcia Dushane of Southampton, Colleen McCartney and her husband Kevin of Belchertown and Diana Wigham and her husband Bill of Westfield. As well as his 4 nephews: Jacob Dushane, David McMahon, Jon McMahon and Zachary Wigham. Due to present circumstances, Jim's family has decided to have a memorial service at a later date. Donations, in lieu of flowers, may be made to the Tariq Khamisa Foundation at www.TKF.org. Arrangements are under the direction of the Firtion Adams FS, 76 Broad St. Westfield, MA 01085. www.firtionadams.com.

I am so sorry to hear of Jim's passing. I went to school with him and belonged to the Hampshire Rebels Fife and Drum Corps with him as well. I can remember his love of Star Wars and Star Trek and his learning the bagpipes while we were in elementary school. And one memory I have that still cracks me up is when he took of running past our science class in high school as we made our way out to the back field--he was practically running on his knees he was scrunched down so low--squealing like ET, which was a hit movie that year. He looked and sounded just like him! Always cheerful and looking to make others laugh. My condolences to your family on your loss.

In this decades-old photo, Jim and I are enjoying playing together on the Sega Genesis. I wasn't sure exactly what I was doing, but Jim was kind enough to include me nonetheless. Many years later, Jim helped introduce me to the board-gaming hobby about which he was so passionate, and I quickly caught the bug myself. Jim was instrumental in helping me enter the workforce as a young man, and I joined his team at Cambridge Credit. With Jim's coaching, I began to learn how to navigate the professional scene, and picked up tools that I will carry with me forever.

I think the image of the two of us, captured over twenty years ago, perfectly mirrors the relationship Jim and I had in the present. I'll remember him as a mentor, as family, and as a friend, and I know his influence will always be felt.

JIm was one of the most genuine people I have known. An absolute joy to play games with chat with. He listened and cared about what you had to say and he was quick with a quip or a joke. We'll miss you buddy.
