Janet Price Obituary

NORTHAMPTON – Janet Price of Northampton, died from pneumonia while under treatment for cancer on June 24, 2018.

Janet Price was born in Sheboygan Wisconsin on March 16th, 1939, to Wilma and Ralph Kreuter. She attended North High School in Sheboygan and did her undergraduate work at UCLA, graduating in 1962 with a BA in mathematics.

She continued on to graduate work at Stanford University and then Dartmouth College, receiving her Ph.D. in psychology in 1972.

Janet taught mostly psychology and some computer science for several years, and then moved into academic computing. She worked at several colleges around the country, including Berea College in Kentucky, Kalamazoo College in Michigan, and Carroll College in Wisconsin. After her last position as Chief Information Officer at Carroll College, she went back to working directly with students and faculty at Amherst College in 2000.

She retired from Amherst College in 2008 and spent her time gardening, making pottery, raising orchids, and participating in the Five Colleges Learning in Retirement programs.

Janet is survived by her two sons, Kai Alexis Price and his longtime partner Mary Gelezunas, Gareth Amaya Price and his wife Lisa Amaya Price, her grandchildren Simon Bryn Amaya Price and Rose Alva

Amaya Price, her sister Kerry Harris, and her brother Tony Kreuter.

A memorial service is planned for Friday, July 13 at 3 PM, at the Lathrop Community Meeting House at 1 Shallowbrook Lane in Northampton. Her sons suggest that in lieu of flowers a donation be made to one of her favorite organizations: Planned Parenthood, Amherst Orchid Society, or Five Colleges Learning in Retirement.

Janet was a terrific moderator of our "New Technologies" 5CLIR seminar in the fall. She was always very knowledgeable, energetic, enthusiastic, and creative. She made us all feel very welcome with her pastries, and two kinds of coffee available when we arrived. She made a big impact on me. I hope wonderful memories of her will bring her family peace.

Dear Kai and Gareth:

Please accept my deepest sympathy on your Mom's passing. Janet was always very congenial at the Amherst Orchid Society meetings and she and I always had a nice conversation about plants and her other interests. She even told me about "Ravelry" the knitting website! she had so many interests and that made her fun to be around. I thank her for her generosity with her plants and her forward thinking. When she emailed me to tell me of her illness and to donate her orchids to the Amherst Orchid Society, I was saddened and shocked. She had been so happy about moving to Lathrop Community and seemed like she was feeling very at home. I'm so sorry that she didn't have more time to enjoy her place there.

My sincere condolences to you and your family.
