While I never took a class with John we interacted often at Hampshire. In meetings of the School of Natural Sciences John was wise shepherd of the Hampshire way. John and I shared a tent at 10,000 feet with two others on the first January Term trip to the Colorado Rockies. John was always a cheerful mentor and model of a scientist.

I am saddened to learn the news of your father´s passing. He was a good friend of my parents (Arnold and Carolyn Westwood) and I often saw your parents when they visited mine in Windsor MA where my parents had a B&B after my dad retired from the Unitarian ministry. I was a student at Hampshire (Fall 71) but sadly I never did take a class with your dad. I wonder how different my life would have been had I done so? Your mother died not long after my dad passed (in 2009). I can see your. Mom´s face now and your dad´s smile. He exuded a positivity about him. I am sorry that I will not be able to attend the memorial for your dad as I will be out of the country. Sincerely, Phoebe Westwood Bushway

John had such zest for life. He was an amazing asset to Hampshire in its early days. One of my favorite courses there was the one John taught with Ray Coppinger on Campus Design. Taking that course led me directly to my ultimate career of recycling and materials management at Harvard University. Condolences and appreciation to John´s family. Cheers, Rob Gogan

John was a long-time, enthusiastic and reliable bass in the Unitarian Universalist Society of Amherst choir. Because he read music and had a good ear we other bases wanted to sing next to him- a delightful crutch.
He always rode his bike to church until moving to Applewood. We will miss him.
