Margaret Berg Obituary

LEESBURG, VA – Margaret Ann (Graefe) Berg, 91, passed away peacefully in Leesburg on Feb. 21, 2018.

Born in a remote village hospital in southern India, she was the youngest child of John Graefe, a Lutheran missionary, and his wife, Wilhelmina. At age 6 she was sent to Kodaikanal boarding school in the Palmiri Mountains of India until her family returned to United States in 1937 to live on the family farm outside of Baltimore, Maryland.

Margaret attended Gettysburg College where she met John Berg, and they married shortly after graduating college. After John began a career in the CIA, Margaret accompanied him on his assignments in Italy, Poland, Austria, Germany, France, Washington DC, Thailand, and Greece, raising three children during much of that time. She also pursued her own career as an elementary school teacher, particularly during the years the family lived in Rockville, Maryland.

Margaret had an artistic side to her and enjoyed activities such as rug-braiding, painting, gardening, and antique-collecting. She had a vivacious personality and developed several lifelong friendships. She will be missed by all who knew her.

Margaret is survived by her children, John (Jean) Berg of Virginia, Deborah (Robert) Bell of Culpepper, and Wendy Berg (Thomas Wartenberg) of Northampton, Massachusetts; and her grandchildren, Joanna and Julia Berg, Ryan Johnson, Alyse Hasan, and Jacob Wartenberg.

She was predeceased by her husband and by her brothers, Edward and James Graefe, and her sister Eleanor Thomas.
