Robert Hawkins Obituary

Robert C. Hawkins

Hadley, MA - Robert Charles "Hawk" Hawkins, 88 of Hadley, passed away on October 7, 2023 after a brief illness.

Robert was born in Greenfield on April 25, 1935, the son of Melvin and Theresa (Morrissey) Hawkins.

Robert attended Greenfield schools and graduated from Greenfield High School in 1953.

Robert leaves behind his loving companion/partner of 35 years, Andrea Morris, her son Scott and their beloved toy poodle, Honey, who will miss him very much. He also leaves behind his three sons, Mitchell (Marcia) of Deerfield, Mark (Georgina) of Springfield, and Michael (Diane) of Richmond, Vermont. He also leaves behind nine grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Robert was predeceased by his daughter, Marijo Demikat, his sisters, Phyllis Kibbet and Marjorie "Sis" Miner, and his brothers, Dwight, Edward, William, and Richard.

Robert had various jobs in his early years. His most rewarding career was as a correctional officer with the Franklin County Sheriff's Department.

Robert was a devoted friend of Bill W. After he retired from the Sheriff's Department he devoted his life to helping hundreds of people on their journeys to recovery and sobriety. He spearheaded the successful efforts to establish the Grapevine, a fellowship hall for 12 Step Recovery Programs.

Warm hearted and friendly, Robert counseled and encouraged people with a special blend of humor and wisdom. He was never at a loss for an inspirational or humorous quote to encourage people who were struggling. Most notably, he would frequently encourage people to "Put a plug in the jug and see what happens." Other favorite phrases were "It is what it is" and "If you don't have a list you are listless." He was also constantly reminding people that if they persevered, "You will discover the beautiful person God intended you to be."

Robert was also known around western Massachusetts as "The Poodle Man" as he walked his many poodles around the UMASS campus. His beloved dogs that predeceased Robert will be buried with "Hawk."

There will be a committal and interment service at Riverside Cemetery in Sunderland on Wednesday October 25 at 11:00 a.m. Following the graveside service, please gather to remember "Hawk" at a Celebration of Life at 12 noon at the Whatley Inn. 193 Chestnut Plain Road, Whatley

If you see a birch tree, Robert asked that you stop and say a prayer under the tree.
