Shulamith Oppenheim Obituary

Shulamith Oppenheim

Pelham, MA - Shulamith Levey Oppenheim, 1928-2025

Shulamith Levey Oppenheim, a sixty five year resident of Pelham, passed away peacefully at her home on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, at the age of 97.

Born on September 2, 1928, in Shaker Heights, Ohio, Shulamith was the daughter of Irving M. Levey and Sarah Brody. She spent her High School years in Brockton, Massachusetts, and continued her education at Radcliffe College and the University of Delaware. In 1949, she married Felix Errera Oppenheim.

The couple, along with their three children, Daniel, Claire, and Paul, moved to Pelham in 1960. After the children left home Shulamith began her career as a children's book author. Her works include "Einstein's Compass," "Fireflies for Nathan," and "The Lily Cupboard" (based on the diary of Anne Frank). A member of the American Folklore Society, her interest in culture and history often shone through in her writing.

Shulamith took piano lessons up until six months before she died. In midlife she was an avid tennis and squash player.

Whether around the kitchen table or in larger gatherings Shulamith and Felix's home was a welcoming venue for the lively exchange of ideas, exchanges that were often enhanced by Shulamith's excellent, imaginative cuisine.

Shulamith will be missed by all who loved her.
